Last week, Ford issued a recall on Mustang Mach-E vehicles sold in Canada due to an issue with the glass. It came to the automaker’s attention that some of the adhesives used on the sunroof and windshield might not work correctly. So far, Ford has recalled over 38,000 vehicles in North America and Europe for the glass bonding issue.

What is the new Ford Mustang Mach-E recall for?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has all of the recalls listed on the website. The first recall is titled “Inadequate Front Windshield Bonding.” The windshield recalls impact 17,692 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles. The NHTSA says that Ford may not have adequately bonded the windshield to the car during production. In rare cases, it could detach from the car. The official NHTSA campaign number is 21V711000.

The second recall is for the same situation but on the sunroof. The recall, titled “Inadequate Panoramic Roof Glass Panel Bonding,” recalls 13,544 Mach-E vehicles. Ford may not have adequately bonded the panoramic roof glass to the car. The official campaign number is 21V712000.

Ford says that the company is sending out owner notification letters by October 27, 2021. Alternatively, owners can call Ford at 1-866-436-7332 to inquire more.

This Mach-E recall is a preventative measure

Fortunately, this recall is taking place before any problems with the sunroof or windshield cause an issue. It appears Ford found the issue with the glass in another vehicle and moved to issue the recall as a preventative measure. Some owners have also reported the roof leaking in certain cars.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Ford noticed the issue after a windshield repair.

“We were made aware from a field report of a cracked windshield repair, and that’s where they noted the windshield urethane adhesion. Then we included the panoramic roof because it utilizes the same urethane application process.”

As the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is in its first year of inception, there are bound to be issues coming off the production line. According to official sales figures from Ford, the 2021 Mustang Mach-E sold 17,277 units during the first eight months of the year. “Ford said it isn’t aware of any accidents or injuries related to these problems, according to regulatory documents,” Detroit Free Press wrote.

Will this impact sales of the EV down the line?

People speculated that another recall was imminent last week when the Canadian recall went up. All of the Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles are made in the same plant in Mexico. Car and Driver called the Mustang Mach-E the “Best EV of the Year,” and sales for it have been quite strong. While such recalls are a blemish on the history of the popular car, it likely won’t have too much of a negative impact.

Last year, Ford made the news for mocking the Tesla Model Y over a similar issue. Tesla issued a recall for an adhesive issue on the Model Y roof, which was successful. While Ford is proactive about this adhesive issue, it reminded the kerfuffle between the two brands last year.

Once the Mach-E recall fix starts rolling out later this year, hopefully, Ford can get the popular EV back on the road quickly.
