One thing we can expect from celebrities is their expensive taste in cars. Some stars, such as Jay Leno, have impressive collections spanning many model years and body styles. Other celebs have only one or two cars, but they’re usually luxurious. For instance, many enthusiasts would appreciate the Mercedes SL in Maren Morris’ garage.

Find out what’s under the hood of the country singer’s roadster and why it holds a special place in her heart.

In 2016, Billboard reported that the country-pop singer Maren Morris bought a new Mercedes-Benz SL-Class 65 AMG. Morris optioned hers with a twin-turbo V12 engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. It harnesses 621 hp and can zoom from 0 to 60 mph in under four seconds.

Morris said she primarily uses the car for cruising, but any driver would still appreciate that speed. Mercedes designed the AMG SL to be a great racer and a comfortable tourer with standard adaptive suspension.

This two-seater’s interior is equally impressive, lavished in tan and black leather. The heated seats also come with heated headrests, and the panoramic sunroof boasts UV-blocking settings. Any musician can appreciate the top-of-the-line Bang & Olufsen sound system, and Morris even confessed she plays her songs on it.

This Benz brims with the most advanced technology features, including smartphone integration (still relatively new at the time) and navigation. The 7.0-inch touchscreen also has a split-screen function, allowing both riders to use different functions simultaneously.

A fully loaded Mercedes-Benz SL-Class typically cost about $219,850 in 2016, but Morris’ example ran her closer to $235,000. That’s because she went all out with diamond-quilted Nappa leather upholstery, 20-inch wheels, and carbon-ceramic brake calipers.

The AMG SL roadster is still alive for the 2022 model year. According to Mercedes-Benz, two V8 twin-turbo engines have replaced the previous V6 and V12 engines. The bigger V8, standard on the AMG SL 63, produces 577 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque.

With a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, it’s faster than the outgoing V12. This car still has adaptive suspension and adds features like all-wheel drive and an electric soft-top convertible.

Why did Maren Morris get a Mercedes?

2016 was also when Maren Morris released her single “80s Mercedes.” The music video premiered a few months later and heavily featured a Mercedes-Benz 380 SL from the same era. However, Morris told Billboard the car didn’t inspire her to write the song.

In that interview, she proudly said she owns a Toyota Prius. Still, she said her dream car has also been the Benz since she saw one in American Gigolo. Though she didn’t get the 450 SL featured in the movie, her example is a fine alternative.

Celebrities love a good Benz

Jay Leno owns a few Mercedes models, including a 1955 300 SL. Collectors consider it one of the most valuable cars, thanks to its gullwing doors and gorgeous design. Leno bought his restored model at auction for $1.4 million.

Singer Miley Cyrus also had a Prius but now owns three sedans and an SUV from Mercedes.

Benzes are also popular among sports stars, including LeBron James.

Saying you own an “80s Mercedes” definitely has a ring to it, but any Benz is an almost-assured classic.
