Maserati is closely related to the legendary automaker Ferrari. The brand has used Ferrari engines in several of its most notable Trofeo configuration models. The 2023 Grecale does not have a Ferrari engine option.
The new Maserati Grecale Trofeo is one of the few Trodeo models not powered by a Ferrari engine. That’s right; the Prancing Horse doesn’t have a horse in this race. Instead, the Grecale Trofeo is powered by Maserati’s Nettuno engine. A non-Ferrari engine hasn’t powered a Trofeo configuration in over two decades.
The exclusion of a Ferrari engine separates the Grecale from other vehicles in the brand’s lineup. It’s also the only small SUV the brand offers, making it even more special. The Grecale bridges the gap for many consumers and exists in the most competitive segment in the world, the small SUV segment. It may be brand-new, but the nameplate could have a big future, depending on its reception.
Maserati Grecale engine options
The Grecale may not have a Ferrari engine option, but it’s no weakling. I tested the Grecale Modena and can confidently say it’s not lacking in power. The base model Grecale GT configuration uses a four-cylinder turbocharged mild hybrid system to make 300 horsepower. The 2023 Maserati Grecale Modena uses a similar powertrain to make a whopping 330 horsepower, which is hearty for a small SUV.
The fully loaded iteration uses a twin-turbocharged V6 to make a mighty 530 horsepower. So, Maserati clearly doesn’t need a Ferrari engine to deliver exceptional performance specs. The brand’s Nettuno engine more than delivers on expectations.
How much does a Maserati Grecale cost?
According to Maserati, the 2023 Maserati Grecale GT starts at $63,500. It’s pricey but still attainable for many consumers, unlike some of its more expensive rivals. Its next grade, the Modena, starts at $72,900. The Maserati Grecale Trofeo costs $102,500.
Maserati’s base model is affordable enough to be an option for luxury SUV shoppers, while its upper trim levels appeal to the more affluent looking for top-tier creature comforts and performance.
Maserati’s new small SUV competes with models like the Porsche Macan and BMW X4. It’s the most affordable Maserati in the brand’s lineup, followed by the Ghibli. Models like the Toyota RAV4 and Tesla Model Y have proved that we’re in the era of the small SUV. As a result, some of the most popular automakers in the world are producing new small SUV nameplates.
Will the Grecale make a huge splash in its segment or fade into the background because of stiff competition? After testing the new small luxury SUV myself, I can report that it certainly provides enjoyable driving dynamics. We’ll just have to wait and see how the nameplate ages and consumers receive it.
