Massive Jeep Grand Cherokee Recall: 355,000 Rear Ends Can Detach
A massive Jeep recall has been issued today over the rear spring with the potential to fall out while driving. Over 354,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L SUVs are in the recall. Stellantis says that the installation of the rear springs was not properly done. The obvious concern is for accidents and injuries from losing control if a spring exits the Grand Cherokee while in motion.
The specific Jeeps involved in the recall are the 2021 and 2023 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L. It does not include those models equipped with the air suspension option. Jeep submitted information to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it knows of 21 cases of springs detaching through dealer warranty repairs. Jeep says there are no reports of injuries or accidents from those incidents.
Which Jeep Grand Cherokees are involved?
The Grand Cherokee SUVs built between May 17, 2021, and May 31, 2023, are in the recall. Those Grand Cherokee L SUVs have build dates between December 5, 2020, and May 31, 2023. Dealers will inspect the rear springs and will reinstall them as necessary. This is all covered under warranty, so there is no charge to owners. Jeep Grand Cherokee owners will be notified by mail at the end of July.
Just last month, Jeep issued a recall for its Cherokee models over the risk of fire. At the time, it warned owners not to park in or near buildings due to the risk. This recall takes in 2014 to 2016 Cherokee SUVs. The problem is with the power liftgate module, which can create an electric short. This is an ongoing recall, as Jeep has no fix for the problem as of now.
Do Jeeps have a lot of recalls?
Previous to this recall, there have been several recalls for Jeep Wrangler models. Most involve 2020 to 2023 Wranglers for various issues. These include high-pressure fuel pump failures for diesel Wranglers, the potential for fuel tank leaks, clutch issues causing potential fires, and software issues with 4xe models.
