In fifth place was the Hyundai Tucson, which Car and Driver loved for its equipped cabin and daring exterior design. However, its lack of a volume knob and goody push-button shifter didn’t sit well with the team. 

The Mazda CX-5 ranked in fourth place, but Car and Driver noted the vehicle’s non-turbo engine could use more oomph, with the team finding the CX-5’s cargo capacity unremarkable. The Toyota RAV4 took third place due to its comfortable ride and great standard driver assistance features. However, its unrefined engine sounds and handling denied the impressive car the top spot.

The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid came second due to its tech features and spacious interior. Its high starting price and bland driving character made the hybrid lose out on the coveted top spot. The Volkswagen Tiguan edged out all the models due to its sporty handling, an additional row of seating, and spacious cabin.

The Mazda CX-5 has earned a perfect 10 out of 10 rating score since 2017, with its recent addition to the list marking the sixth time in a row the CX-5 has appeared on the site. The publication commended the model for its beautifully sculpted bodywork and athleticism that beat its competitors.

Car and Driver’s verdict on the car was that it is “a masterclass in making a mainstream SUV feel like it belongs in high society.”
