Maverick vs. Ranger: Which one Is Bigger on the Inside?
When it comes to the Maverick vs Ranger battle, you may be surprised to learn which Ford is bigger on the inside. The “little” Ford Maverick beats the Ranger in interior space. The EPA says the passenger volume of the Maverick is 100.3 cubic feet while passenger volume of the Ranger SuperCab is just 89.2 cubic feet, and the larger SuperCrew holds just 97.6 cubic feet of your stuff. While the two are similar, they are not designed to be used in the same ways.
The Maverick is bigger (on the inside)
The 2022 Ford Ranger is well optioned and is 11 inches longer and five inches wider than a Maverick. Its bed is a lot longer. But that doesn’t translate to interior room.
The Maverick is Ford’s least-expensive truck and comes with four doors for five passengers. The SuperCab version the Ranger seats four and rear passengers enter through two half doors. The SuperCrew Ranger gets real doors and seats five.
The Ranger may be the bigger truck on the outside. But the two are remarkably close on the inside, with the Maverick slightly beating the Ranger in headroom and shoulder room.
It’s what’s on the inside that counts
The four-door version of the Ranger is the SuperCrew. The Maverick only comes with four doors and seats five. The SuperCab version the Ranger seats four and rear passengers enter through two half doors. The SuperCrew Ranger seats five and has four doors. If you’re considering a Maverick vs. a Ranger, you need to get the SuperCrew to match people-hauling abilities.
The Maverick vs. Ranger numbers tell the story:
Maverick | Ranger SuperCrew | |
Headroom (front/rear) | 40.3 inches/39.6 inches | 39.8 inches/38.3 inches |
Legroom (front/rear) | 42.8 inches/35.9 inches | 43.1 inches/34.5 inches |
Shoulder Room (front/rear) | 57.3 inches/55.6 inches | 56.7 inches/56.3 inches |
Hip Room (front/rear) | 55.4 inches/54.1 inches | 55.8 inches/53.5 inches |
How does the Maverick’s interior size compare to other unibody trucks’?
The Honda Ridgeline is a slightly larger truck than Maverick, and the interior reflects that. Its interior is rated at 109.7 cubic feet by the EPA. When it comes to other dimensions, it trumps the Maverick and Ranger with much more shoulder room, at 62 inches in the front. Of course, the Ridgeline is also 78.6 inches wide overall.
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe is similar in size to the Maverick and targeted at a similar lifestyle market. The Santa Cruz’s bed is shorter, at 52.1 inches and maybe Hyundai put that space into legroom? The Hyundai offers 36.5 inches of rear seat legroom, while the ranger has 35.9 inches. The interior of the Hyundai is rated at 101.8 cubic feet. It’s interior is very close in size to the Maverick’s.
But none of these trucks match the 132 cubic feet of a full-size F-150 truck’s interior.
What is a unibody truck?
Pretty much every modern car is a unibody. That means that the entire body of the car supports all of the car. A regular passenger car would fall apart pretty quickly if you cut the roof off because it needs the roof for support as much as it does the floor and doors.
Traditional trucks are built on top of a tough frame. The body of a modern truck, and many heavy-duty vans, is placed on top of the frame. By putting the body on top of the frame, the frame can do the work of towing and support more weight.
A unibody truck is based on a car or SUV, in the Maverick’s case it’s on the Ford Bronco Sport platform, and the Santa Cruz is based on a Tucson, both of which are unibodies. Instead of giving you lots of passenger room in the back, manufacturers stiffen the middle and give you a bed.
But if you’re looking to compare the inside of the Maverick vs. the Ranger, one is a clear winner.
