Thanks to its dynamic mix of crossovers and sporty sedans, Mazda is well-positioned, despite coronavirus concerns. To keep the theme alive in 2021, this Japanese carmaker is introducing additional power and more modern tech. Here are some of the most significant updates to the Mazda lineup in the coming year. 

The Mazda3 will feature two new powertrains 

The Mazda3 is already a standout in the compact car class, but things will look different on this model for 2021. The latest Mazda3 will have two new engine options, bringing the total up to three. Base models will come with a 155-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine; the previously standard 186-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder is now the mid-level option. A more robust, 250-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine will be on the upper-level Mazda3 trims. 

Buyers will be able to opt for the new turbo-four on both the sedan and hatchback body styles. Because of the downshift in power, the Mazda3 will have a slightly lower starting price of $21,445 as AutoNews reports. The top-of-the-line hatch version with all-wheel-drive will cost $34,696.

We can look forward to slight updates on Mazda’s popular small crossovers

Mazda also announced refreshing updates on its small crossovers. The company introduced its all-new CX-30 subcompact crossover for 2020, and this model has the same platform as the Mazda3. Many of us had great things to say about this new model. However, we didn’t like that the CX-30 didn’t come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; fortunately, these smartphone apps will be standard for 2021. 

AutoNews speculates that the new Mazda3 powertrains will be available on the CX-30 too. While the CX-30 has become a popular choice, the future of Mazda’s elder CX-3 subcompact crossover is less certain. The CX-30 and the CX-3 technically compete in the same class, even though the CX-30 is the larger of the two. 

For a more capable version of the CX-30, you’ll want to consider the best-selling CX-5. The 2021 CX-5 improves upon the 2020 model and will have an updated, easier-to-use infotainment system. This SUV will also offer more flair with the all-new Carbon Edition trim level.

Mazda’s three-row SUV, the CX-9, will primarily be the same in 2021. However, the new version will come with a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, and it will feature a Carbon Edition trim level too. A redesign announcement for the CX-9 is possible for 2021 or 2022. We also wouldn’t be surprised if Mazda introduced a new V6 for this model. 

While the CX-9 and CX-5 consistently earn praise, Mazda indicated its missing an option that serves as a bridge between these models. In partnership with Toyota, Mazda is likely to unveil an all-new midsize crossover next year. We might also get an electrified Mazda crossover in the U.S. soon; the company already launched an electric EV in its European market.
