When the Mazda CX-50 made its debut, rumors suggested that the Mazda CX-5 would lose out and be discontinued. But while the CX-50 is a popular, excellent SUV to consider, it hasn’t knocked the CX-5 off its throne.

The next-generation Mazda CX-5 will stick around with the Mazda CX-50

The Mazda CX-5 and Mazda CX-50 don’t seem to be having any brotherly drama. There is still space in the lineup for both of these popular SUVs

However, rumors did suggest that the CX-50 would eventually replace the CX-5, especially in America. The CX-50 is the first Mazda SUV that was specially designed for the American market.

As a result, it feels muscular, has a modern hybrid engine, has more passenger space, and has more cargo space. Plus, it has rugged off-roading upgrades.

But the CX-5 still has plenty of benefits in comparison. For example, it has a smoother ride and a quieter interior.

Mazda marketer, Alastair Doak, confirmed that the next-generation Mazda CX-5 is absolutely coming. It’s currently in the development phase, and there’s not much information to share aside from it’s definitely on the way.

The CX-5 is the brand’s best-selling SUV worldwide. In 2023, it sold 153,808 models in America while the CX-50 only moved 44,595 models.

But the CX-5 could be more popular because it’s been around since 2012 and the CX-50 just debuted in 2023.

Also, the CX-5 has been due for some upgrades for a while. Its last redesign was in 2017 with a mid-cycle refresh in 2022. It still wins plenty of awards and has modern tech such as a head-up display and wireless Apple Carplay, but its new style should be exciting.

Rumors suggest that the new Mazda CX-5 hybrid will launch with the new generation. Unlike the Mazda CX-50, it won’t share a hybrid engine with the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

A new hybrid engine will help the CX-5 stand out. However, the RAV4 Hybrid pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine to crank out 219 hp and 163 lb-ft of torque. It gets an EPA-estimated 41 mpg in the city and up to 38 mpg on the highway.

The CX-5 could have more power and efficiency, but we will have to wait and see. Stay tuned for updates.
