The Mazda CX-80 Previews the Mazda CX-90 for America
Things are getting bigger and better for Mazda. We’ve been behind the wheel of the new Mazda CX-50, and now we get to take a look at the Mazda CX-80. However, the CX-80 isn’t coming to America. Soon the Mazda CX-90 will arrive instead, but the models could be similar.
What to expect with the Mazda CX-90
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 could make an appearance soon. A few people have caught a few spy images of the new SUV being tested. However, the vehicle is heavily covered in camouflage. Despite not being able to get a clear look, we have few ideas about what to expect.
For example, Mazda is creating a few new vehicles to meet the demands of Americans. Options like the Mazda CX-9 or CX-5 don’t have enough passenger or cargo space for families and could be more rugged.
That’s why we got the Mazda CX-50 earlier in the year. It provides more room for passengers and cargo. Plus, it’s the first Mazda to include true off-roading chops. Plus, the CX-80 is about to launch in Europe. It could be a preview of what to expect for the CX-90.
Like the CX-80, the CX-90 will have three rows of seats. It could seat up to seven or eight passengers, like the CX-9. However, the CX-90 will have a boxier shape and a taller roofline to provide more headroom. Also, the third row could be large enough for adults.
How much power will the CX-90 have?
The powertrain options for the 2024 Mazda CX-90 haven’t been revealed. But according to Motor 1, it’s safe to expect new inline-six gasoline engines, a hybrid setup, and a new plug-in hybrid option.
With the Mazda CX-60, you get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that’s paired with an electric motor and a 17.8-kWh battery pack. It could churn out 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque in the CX-90.
The Mazda CX-9 has a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that cranks out 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. So, the new engines could be faster and more engaging.
The new 3.3-liter inline-six engine with 280 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque in the CX-60 could be tuned to provide more power with the CX-90.
It could be available with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. Also, rumors suggest that the engines will be paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The CX-90 could get something similar to the Miata’s Kinematic Posture Control to reduce body roll by applying brake force to the inner rear wheel while cornering.
When will we learn more about the CX-90?
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 could be announced by the end of the year. It’s expected to emerge before the CX-70 comes out. Perhaps something will come out during the upcoming SEMA show.
Rumors suggest that the CX-90 will include tons of typical Mazda attributes. It should have a smooth ride, responsive handling, and an athletic performance. Plus, it could feature a near-luxury interior with modern tech that prioritizes safety.
We can’t wait to see how big Mazda goes with the CX-90, but it could mean the Mazda CX-9 is going away. It should provide families with the space they need without compromising beloved Mazda attributes.
