According to iSeeCars, the 2023 Mazda CX-9 is the best mid-size SUV for the money and longevity. Basically, the Mazda CX-9 has the best value for its lifespan.
This is surprising because it came ahead of the Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Highlander, and Honda Pilot. These SUVs have stout reputations for being affordable and reliable.
iSeeCars bases this information on a massive study that includes the new sales price of over 80 million vehicles sold between September and December 2023. This study was paired with another study that includes 181 million vehicles to determine the longest-lasting option.
The Mazda CX-9 wins the class with a new sales price of $43,448, an average cost of $2,009 per 10,000 miles, and an average lifespan of 216,227 miles.
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner has an average new vehicle price of $49,995, an average cost of $2,163, and an average lifespan of 230,992 miles. So, it costs more to operate and lasts longer.
Also, the 2023 Honda Pilot has an average new vehicle cost of $48,754, a cost of $2,203 per 10,000 miles, and an average lifespan of 221,230 miles. So, it’s more expensive than the CX-9 and lasts a little longer too.
But value includes more than longevity. The resale value and reliability ratings are also included. The 2023 CX-9 has a reliability rating of 78 out of 100 from J.D.Power. The 2023 4Runner earned an 86, which makes sense. It lasts longer.
The 2023 Pilot earned a score of 80 out of 100. Scores between 70 and 80 are average while anything between 81 and 90 is above average.
Plus, the CX-9 has a solid resale value. It’s expected to depreciate by about 31% after five years of ownership. If purchased for $44,622 it could retain a resale value of $30,504.
