The Mazda CX-90 Already Has 3 Advantages Over the Kia Telluride
We are being teased by the Mazda CX-90 again! We can’t wait to see what this new three-row SUV can do, and the clues suggest that incredible upgrades are on the way. Also, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 might already beat the Kia Telluride in three different areas.
Will the 2024 Mazda CX-90 be better than the Kia Telluride?
Maybe, all we have are clues about the 2024 Mazda CX-90 at the moment. We need to wait for its official debut to confirm how it compares to the Kia Telluride. Plus, the 2023 Kia Telluride is a prestigious SUV that’s hard to beat.
It’s been dominating the competition for years and continues to earn first-place rankings. The CX-9 is a big deal because rumors suggest that it could finally provide real competition against the Telluride.
The Telluride has responsive handling and corners pretty well, but it feels a bit hefty around curves with a noticeable body roll.
The Mazda CX-90 could provide a sportier performance. According to AutoBlog, the traditional Mazda bell-shaped torque converter is smaller to make the engine and gearbox unit more compact.
This leaves more space and allows for the engine to sit further back against the transmission tunnel, opening more space in the font for a proper steering angle and proper sports car suspension.
Like the Mazda CX-60, the CX-90 will use an eight-speed automatic transmission with multi-plate clutches, planetary gears, and an integrated electric motor.
Plus, it has the Miata’s Kinetic Posture Control (KPC) system standard. It’s a brake-actuated torque vectoring system to enhance its performance.
How much power will the 2024 CX-90 have?
Rumors suggest that the 2024 Mazda CX-90 will pack a powerful punch. The Kia Telluride has a 3.8-liter V6 engine with 291 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. This is an excellent amount of power, but the CX-90 may offer more.
Mazda confirmed that the 2024 CX-90 will be powered by a new turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine with 340 hp and 396 lb-ft of torque. It’s unclear if this is the standard engine or an available option.
It’s known as the e-Skyactiv turbo engine because it’s more efficient and used electricity. It’s a mild hybrid system that boosts efficiency without taking from its performance.
This could make the CX-90 more fuel efficient than the Telluride. The Telluride gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and up to 26 mpg on the highway.
While rumors of a Mazda CX-90 PHEV model are circulating, this information hasn’t been confirmed.
How can the Telluride beat the CX-90?
The Kia Telluride could still have advantages over the 2024 Mazda CX-90. For example, it can tow up to 5,500 lbs, and we don’t know how strong the CX-90 is yet. It could be more affordable too. The Telluride starts at $35,890.
Plus, the Telluride X-Pro and X-Line are more off-road-oriented trims. The X-Pro features a suspension lift, all-terrain tires, an additional towing mode, beefier roof rails, AWD lock, and hill descent control. It could be more capable of off-roading than the 2024 CX-90.
We only have to wait a few more weeks to learn more about the CX-90. It will be revealed on January 31. Until then, we can speculate that it might be sportier, more powerful, and more efficient than the Telluride.
