Mazda to Recall 43k Vehicles for Power Steering Failure
If you’ve ever lost the power steering on your car, you know that it can make low speed turns a real workout, and parallel parking nearly impossible. If it were to fail suddenly, you might even crash before you could adjust.
In January 2024, the NHTSA announced that Mazda was recalling up to 43,752 vehicles for potential power steering failure. The automaker claims the problem lies in the way the steering system was assembled: a gear that connects the power-assist function to the steering may not engage. The fix is replacing the spring that engages this gear and doing a better job greasing the entire assembly.
Mazda has only officially announced recalls for 2024 CX-90s (both PHEV and mild hybrid configurations). But the numbers don’t add up on this one. Mazda hasn’t shipped anywhere close to 43,000 2024 CX-90s yet. And it probably never will. In all of 2023, it only sold 29,121 CX-90s.
Will this recall affect other models? To impact the projected 43,752 vehicles it must. When Mazda sends recall letters to notify owners in mid-March, we’ll have a much better picture of the size of this recall.
