Mercedes-AMG just keeps dominating at the famed Nürburgring course. The performance-focused manufacturer’s GT 63 S set the record lap time for the luxury class. Shortly after, it did the same for the street-legal production cars with the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series.

Mercedes-AMG is a subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz that’s dedicated to producing some of the fastest cars on the planet. Its goal is undoubtedly coming to fruition, as the automaker consistently outperforms its rivals at the Nürburgring in Germany.

Manufacturers often visit the legendary Nürburgring course to test its most athletic models, and record lap times are used as bragging rights. Automotive enthusiasts follow these track times closely, as it provides a glimpse into the true potential of upcoming sports cars.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is the latest to earn the moniker of the fastest production car in the world. So, what was its record-breaking Nürburgring performance like, and what does the vehicle have to offer? Let’s take a deeper dive to see what this supercar is all about.

Mercedes-AMG unleashed the beast

Automotive records are bound to fall, as sports cars become more powerful and precise than ever before. That’s why it’s quite impressive that the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ held on to the previous Nürburgring record since 2018. 

However, all records are set to be broken, and the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series did just that. Mercedes-Benz announced the accomplishment via a press release a week after touting the GT 63 S’s performance at the Nürburgring. Notably, both lap times were set on the same day, November 4, 2020.

The GT Black Series completed its Nürburgring lap in record time, but identifying how much it beat the previous mark is somewhat complicated. Until 2019, the lap times were measured by a 12.8-mile version of the course due to a slight difference in the start and finish line. Since then, the official Nürburgring lap has been based on a 12.944-mile version of the course with identical start and finish lines.

Racecar driver Maro Engel was behind the wheel of the record-breaking car as it zoomed around the course. He completed the 12.8-mile lap in six minutes and 43.616 seconds, beating Lamborghini’s old mark of six minutes and 44.970 seconds. Plus, he finished the 12.944-mile lap in six minutes and 48.047 seconds.

“It’s really impressive how much downforce the Black Series generates and how confident and reliably it can be driven, even at the absolute limit. My hat is off to the developers from Affalterbach for what they have put on wheels here. And I’m very pleased that I was able to demonstrate these fascinating engineering skills with this great lap time,” said Engel via the press release.

What’s under the hood of the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series

Drivers who get behind the wheel of this supercar will expect quite a bit from it, considering its starting MSRP is $389,000. The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series doesn’t disappoint, as it’s loaded with just about everything AMG has to offer.

A 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 engine with a flat crankshaft powers this sports car. This powerplant kicks out 720 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is also outfitted with a performance exhaust system, a coil-over suspension with adaptive adjustable damping, and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Mercedes-AMG says the GT Black Series can sprint from 0-60 MPH in 3.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 202 MPH. We don’t have any reason to dispute this claim after seeing its record-breaking Nürburgring lap.

The GT Black Series earns legendary status

Automakers are consistently aiming for faster Nürburgring lap times, whether it be for marketing purposes or pride. So, we shouldn’t expect the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series’ mark to last forever. Regardless, its feat is undoubtedly remarkable, and it has earned its place in history.
