Mercedes-AMG is known for manufacturing speed demons. However, it still opens eyes when this performance team-up makes headlines with record-breaking numbers. The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S is making waves throughout the automotive industry after its jaw-dropping performance on the legendary Nürburgring course.

Located in Western Germany, this grueling track is frequently used by manufacturers to show off the capability of performance models. An automaker undoubtedly takes quite a bit of pride when one of its vehicles completes a quick lap at the Nürburgring. However, setting records puts a model in a whole different stratosphere, as it proves dominance over the rest of its competitors.

Mercedes-AMG, the performance division of Mercedes-Benz, can utilize accolades like this to pique car enthusiasts’ interest. Although, not every gearhead will be able to get behind the wheel of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S. This high-performance four-door coupe had an eyebrow-raising starting MSRP of $161,200 for the 2020 model year. The manufacturer has yet to reveal the pricing for the upcoming model.

Just how well did the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S perform at the Nürburgring, and what’s under the hood of this beast? Read on, as we’ll break down everything you’ll ever want to know about this dream car.

The Nürburgring record for the luxury class belongs to Mercedes-AMG once again

Watch the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S run its record lap at the Nürburgring.

If you’re someone who works tirelessly to help develop a sports car, you’re going to want to be the one behind the wheel during an important event. That might just be why AMG development engineer and former race car driver Demian Schaffert took the reigns at the Nürburgring.

Mercedes-Benz announced that Schaffert broke the luxury-class lap time record at the North Loop of the Nürburgring via a press release. The full track measures 12.944 miles long, and the stopwatch starts and ends at the same point in Turn 13. The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S accomplished the feat with a lap time of 7 minutes and 27.800 seconds.

This success at the Nürburgring isn’t new for Schaffert or Mercedes-AMG. He previously drove the 2018 GT 63 S to a then-record lap time of 7 minutes and 30.110 seconds, according to the Nürburgring’s official website. However, a German rival recently shattered that mark. The 2021 Porsche Panamera Turbo S, which received a massive power boost this year, delivered a lap time of 7 minutes and 29.810 seconds on September 24, 2020.

AMG-crafted vehicles are a thing of beauty, and there have been many Mercedes-AMG classics throughout the years. The 2021 GT 63 S is no exception. Its major components were engineered by AMG to deliver ultimate power and precision. For instance, its 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 kicks out an outrageous 630 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. This powerplant helps the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S sprint from 0-60 MPH in just 3.1 seconds. Meanwhile, the car has an electronically limited top speed of 195 MPH.

The GT 63 S is also equipped with a nine-speed multi-clutch automatic transmission, and it sends power to all four wheels. Notably, Mercedes-AMG outfitted the record-breaking 2021 GT 63 S with the optional AMG Aerodynamics Package. This includes a fixed rear aerofoil, an optimized diffuser in the rear apron, an optimized front apron with larger front splitters, and more.

A rivalry reignited

Everyone likes to cheer on their favorite manufacturer when it comes to setting records. Now we can expect some exciting developments now that Mercedes-AMG has once again reclaimed the throne at the Nürburgring. The 2022 models won’t be rolling out for quite some time. However, the pressure will be on Porsche Panamera Turbo S to dethrone the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S the next time it takes the stage at the Nürburgring.
