For the past four months, the Chevy C8 Corvette has been the fastest-selling car in America. However, it has been unseated from its lofty heights by none other than the Mercedes G Wagen. It should come as no surprise that America’s favorite sports car has been beaten out by a savage V8 SUV.

Why is the Mercedes G Wagen the fastest-selling car in America?

According to CarScoops, the Mercedes G-Wagen jumped the C8 Corvette for the fastest-selling car in America as of May. Seeing as how we are currently in a bit of a car production crisis, you might think that the fastest-selling car might be something sensible like a Honda Civic or a Ford F-150 or something like that, but no.

The Mercedes G-Class, as Mercedes-Benz officially calls it, is clearly cool, but it is far from the most sensible SUV, much less, vehicle on the market. To continue the trend, the Chevy C8 Corvette slid to the number two spot, and the new number 3 position is now held by the Cadillac Escalade. This current sales information would seem to suggest that people are most excited about luxury and sports cars.

What are the other fastest-selling cars in America?

According to CarScoops, the Chevrolet Camaro, Kia Stinger, the Porsche 718 Cayman, and the Porsche 911 came in the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 18th positions, respectively and all sold faster than the average used car. The trend seems pretty consistent that even during the production crisis (maybe even because of it), the cars that people buy are the higher-end models.

Karl Brauer, an iSeeCars Executive Analyst, said, “Sports cars were a popular vehicle segment throughout the pandemic as a source of joy, and their popularity has continued as the country opens up.”

What about the giant SUVs

Even though the list of the fastest-selling cars in America is dominated by sports cars and muscle cars, the top is still a giant luxury SUV. It’s easy to see why the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is so popular. It lines up perfectly with all the current trends. Unlike most current SUVs that simply pretend to be capable utility vehicles while actually focusing on comfort, the Mercedes G Wagen actually does both.

The G Wagen is a known off-road monster. Its roots stretch back to a very spartan hardcore military truck. Over the decades, it slowly morphed into a full-blown luxury SUV that can cost well into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. That being said, even the base model G-Wagens start at $131,750.

However, American car buyers have a wide and varied appetite for new cars and SUVs. The recent uptick in hybrid and electric SUVs is also putting up good numbers in the fastest-selling cars in America.

Vehicles like the Volkswagen ID.4 (18th fastest), the Jeep Wrangler 4xe (16th), the Toyota Rav4 Hybrid (11th), the Rav4 Prime (6th), and the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid (4th) are all sold faster than the average new car during May.

How long does it take to sell one Mercedes G Wagen?

In general, new cars took an average of 47.1 days to sell, while used cars took an average of 34.7 days to sell. A 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class takes an average of 9.4 days to sell with an average price of $174,887.

These kinds of sales figures go to show that the car market is a strange place that isn’t always the most logical or sensible market. However, it is nice to see that people are still buying vehicles with their hearts and not just their budget.
