Mercedes-Benz EQ is teasing us with pics of its new 2023 EQS SUV ahead of its April 19 digital launch.

The EQS SUV is the fourth model announced to come to the US based on the new modular architecture for premium and luxury class electric vehicles.

“In the interior, intuitive digital controls and innovative trim elements merge to create an avant-garde ambience,” the company said in a news release announcing the digital premiere.

But the big news is the tease of the first non-camouflaged, but dimly lit, exterior picture of the 2023 EQS SUV.

What is the new 2023 EQS SUV?

The new EQS will bring “S-Class levels of luxury with an electric architecture all its own,” Mercedes says. For those who don’t speak fluent Mercedes, that means that it will be the electric SUV version of its top-dog car. The S-Class is the company’s most expensive, most advanced, and generally most highly-regarded sedan. Most of the features you see on an S Class eventually trickle down to the more mainstream E and C Class Benzes.

The 2023 EQS SUV will join the EQB and EQE in the new all-electric lineup of Mercedes EQ vehicles. The EQB is an all-terrain-focused SUV, while the EQE is midsize sedan. The new EQ series vehicles all have a new electric motor design, lithium ion batteries, and the much-hyped MBUX Hyperscreen.

The 2022 EQS sedan has already been minted as the EQ flagship sedan, while the EQS SUV will take over as the flagship luxury SUV. The announced price of the 2023 EQS is more than $147,000.

It’s not a Mercedes-Benz it’s a Mercedes EQ

Mercedes EQ is a new brand from Mercedes. EQ is a whole ecosystem of products, from vehicles to charging services to home energy storage. The company has announced a new eBike, for example, and has plans to sell wall chargers for its vehicles.

The company premiered the brand in 2016 with the EQC Concept vehicle. Since then, it’s launched four vehicles and announced several others. It premiered EQG off-road focused SUV concept of its venerable G-Wagon that looks like it’s aimed at the Tesla Cybertruck and the upcoming GMC Hummer EV SUV.

While Mercedes-Benz plans to be an all-electric manufacturer by 2030, the EQ brand is aimed at establishing it in the electric market. The brand is one of eight that Mercedes owns that include Maybach, AMG, Athlon, a financial services arm, and Mercedes Me, which is its technology development company. 

Mercedes says EQ stands for Intelligent Electric Mobility. It’s trying to position the EQ brand as more of an electric mobility company that happens to make uber-luxury vehicles, as much as a car brand.

The other EQ models

The 2022 EQS is the most widely-available model of EQ cars today. It’s powered by a 329-hp motor and carries five passengers in luxury. But it’s big. At 207.3 inches, or more than 17 feet long, it is longer than the Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna minivan, and they both carry seven people with luggage.

The EQB SUV is designed to be a taller all-electric three-row SUV with seating for seven. It will arrive later this year. It’s expected to be similar in size to a GLS 450.

The EQE is a mid-size sedan that the company says matches the E-Class. The E-Class is one of the company’s best-selling vehicles because it combines near S-Class levels of refinement, but at a lower price point and with a smaller footprint. The EQE is scheduled to arrive later in 2022 as well.
