Michael Jordan Just Bought the Michael Jordan of Cars
I’m not much of a sports guy, but it’s hard not to know who Michael Jordan is. According to many people, Jordan is the greatest player to ever play the game of basketball. The point of the statement is perception. Whether true or not, Michael Jordan is objectively one of the best players ever, but he also represents a time, a generation, an era of basketball that is likely the most influential of the sport’s history. Michael Jordan is a symbol. Like Jordan, so is the insane hypercar the former Chicago Bull just bought for $3.5 million. Jordan just got a Hennessey Venom F5 Roadster to add to his already insane car collection.
What’s the most expensive car Michael Jordan has ever bought?
Jordan has a hell of a car collection. The Bull has a pile of rare and valuable Porsches, a McLaren-Mercedes SLR 722, and probably most notably, a 2010 Bugatti Veyron Sang Noir, a super-limited version of the Veyron. Because Bugatti only made 12 of them, Jordan paid $2.2 million for his.
Despite having other multi-million-dollar cars, the most expensive car Michael Jordan owns appears to be this $3.5 million Hennessey Venom F5 Roadster.
What is a Hennessey Venom F5 Roadster?
Picking from the weirdly huge lineup of multi-million-dollar hypercars these days is no easy task. Ferrari, McLaren, Pagani, and Gordon Murray are only a small handful of companies that offer the mega-rich hypercars for mega-rich money. However, Jordan went with Hennessey, which, at risk of exposing me as a novice sportsman, Hennessey is kind of the MJ of the car world. Think about it; they are both all about performance, they are divisive, inarguably one of the best of their times, and costs stupid money to have them in your lineup.
Despite the Venom F5 Roadster debuting over a year ago, MJ just took delivery of his. Of course, John Hennessey, the company’s CEO, delivered the car personally, seeing as how the company only made 30 examples of the Roadster. Although the photos of John and Michael standing in front of the car barely shows the car at all, we can see a carbon fiber body with some hot-yellow pinstriping.
The Venom F5 Roadster looks a lot like the normal (“normal,” yeah, right!) Venom. The main difference is that the Roadster is, well, a Roadster. According to Motor1, there is a removable carbon-fiber roof panel that weighs just 18 pounds. There is also heat-tempered glass allowing you and those drooling to check out a little bit of the engine. That glass is capable of withstanding 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
The craziest part is that the Roadster that Michael Jordan bought only weighs 102 lbs more than the regular F5, of which there are only 24 examples.
How fast is the Venom F5 Roadster?
The F5 Roadster’s sheet metal hides a techno beast made for only one thing; going fast as hell. The Venom F5 Roadster has a mid-mounted twin-turbocharged 6.6-liter V8 engine. It produces an earth-shattering 1,817 horsepower and 1,193 pound-feet of torque. That nuclear powerplant pairs with a seven-speed, single-clutch semi-automatic transmission. Hennessey claims the supercar can exceed 300 miles per hour, with the company calling the roadster “the world’s fastest and most powerful convertible.”
