However, after Ford’s recent update of the Super Duties, we realized that most buyers might not be considering one of the best American trucks for their next purchase.

Car & Driver cleverly likens the 2023 F-Series Super Duty trucks to the Porsche 911. While this comparison might seem absurd at first, the point C/D is making is that, like the Porsche 911, the F-Series Super Duties come with a smattering of models. The Ford Super Duty is also offered with three engines and four different power outputs.
The Ford F-Series is already a diverse collection of trucks with many different configurations. However, the Ford Super Duty trucks are made for working and, as such, require finely tuned models for certain jobs.
That said, the Ford Super Duty is quite different from the Porsche 911 in that now, these formerly brutish workers are softer and more friendly for everyday life. What’s new for the 2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty trucks?
While Ford is calling the new fifth-gen 2023 Super Duty “all-new,” the moniker might be a bit of a stretch. The frame, underpinnings, brakes, and driveline parts (with the exception of a newly-available 11.6-inch rear axle) are, for the most part, the same bits.
The new trucks look quite distinct now. The body has more of a boxier design giving the work truck a bit of style and edge. Each of the new models has a distinctive front fascia, as well as other unique design elements.
The 2023 Ford Super Duty is a tech playground
One of the biggest changes to come to the new work trucks is the interior and tech upgrades. For all of human history, the Ford Super Duty trucks have been all function over form. This has changed.
The fifth-generation Super Duties now come filled to the brim with screens, sensors, buttons, and more. Aside from the bigger screens and other updated systems, the Ford Super Duty now comes with a 5G data connection and an interior work surface. Now even the bed and tailgate got techy upgrades. The tailgate has power opening and closing capabilities, as well as new sensors and a camera in the top rail to assist in backing up if you have the gate down.
While we are on the subject of the back half of the truck, the Super Duty gets Ford’s Pro Trailer Backup Assist. Although this system could be helpful for a driver new to towing, most people will do better with the ol’ arm around the passenger seat turnaround. That said, Pro Trailer Hitch Assist is a far more useful tool. Using brainy cameras and computers, the truck can lock on to the ball and automatically back up until the ball and hitch are lined up.
What is the best engine for the 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty?
Despite all the many changes, the Power Stroke turbocharged 6.7-liter diesel V8 remains the go-to powerplant for the big boys. Why fix what ain’t broke? Still, there is a new V8 coming for the Super Duty line. This all-new 6.8-liter V8 is the entry-level engine in Ford’s new 2023 SD pickup trucks, but Ford has yet to give it a name.
This monster plant makes 475 horsepower and 1050 pound-feet of torque. There is only one transmission for this engine; the ten-speed automatic transmission. And all trims save the XL comes with 4WD as standard.
Is the 2023 Ford Super Duty lineup worth it?
All of these updates have made the Ford Super Duty a viable option for more truck buyers. Still, these trucks are made for hauling and working. What these updates did is bring the Super Duty to Ford customers who might need some towing and hauling but also just need a regular truck for daily life. I would argue that buying a big truck just to commute to work and hit the grocery might be a waste, but if you foresee yourself needing any towing power, the Ford F-series Super Duty is friendlier than ever.
