Mini owners are known for modifying their cars’ color schemes to fit their personalities. From the traditional check pattern to the Union Jack, Mini roofs provide the perfect canvas for expressiveness. Though the British automaker has offered few factory options to jazz up its cars’ roofs, that’s now changed with the Mini Multitone Edition.

What is the Mini Multitone Edition?

Last year’s rejuvenated line-up introduced the Mini Multitone Edition roof on the Cooper SE, featuring three paint colors that faded into one another. Though buyers could get the snazzy roof on only the electrically assisted SE, the brand has broadened the options to all three- and five-door Mini Cooper and Clubman models, regardless of trim level.

According to Mini, the Cooper hardtop comes exclusively in a Sage Green body color, while the Clubman comes in only Indian Summer Red. Nevertheless, all get a Mini Multitone Edition roof in three gradients.

The Multitone Edition roof starts with Light Aspen White in the front and darkens to Melting Silver II in the middle and Jet Black in the rear. Three perpendicular rainbow stripes in a satin clearcoat provide a pop of color. Mini says the motif “emphasizes the characteristic three-part Mini silhouette and becomes an expression of personal style,” allowing buyers to “express their own personality and be part of the progressive MINI journey.”

The rainbow graphic represents “diversity” and a “positive attitude,” depicted as an abstract white logo on the Indian Summer Red and Sage Green backgrounds. 

Unfortunately, only the grayscale on green or red is available for gas-powered Minis. The blue and red options on the Cooper SE remain limited to the EV model, Autoblog reports.

What else do you get with this rare edition?

The Mini Multitone Edition design doesn’t stop at the top. The theme continues around the vehicle with two-tone green and red badging on the wheels and fenders. Inside the cabin, the dashboard and sun visors carry the abstract rainbow, which also adorns other trim pieces and the floor mats. 

In addition, these models will come from the factory with a multifunctional sports leather steering wheel with the Multitone Edition emblem on the lower spoke, a bespoke 3D-printed ignition key cap, and two-tone 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels with exclusive wheel caps.

The company states the cars will be painted using an “innovative” wet-on-wet process — with each color applied directly after the other — in the Mini plant in Oxford, England. Mini says that “due to changing environmental conditions, deviations in the color pattern may occur, making each Mini Multitone Edition vehicle unique.”

When does the Mini Multitone Edition come out, and how much will it cost?

Pricing for the Mini Multitone Edition is “coming soon,” Mini says. Buyers should expect a modest price hike over whichever trim level they choose.

Though the availability date remains unclear, the company says, “Production is limited to just 125 U.S. models and begins in October 2022, with deliveries anticipated before the end of year.”
