Mitsubishi Announces New 2021-22 Models: Will Anyone Notice?
Mitsubishi works on a different plane than the other manufacturers. Where that plane is we’re not sure. We’re not totally sure that Mitsubishi knows. Nonetheless, while plodding along its chosen path Mitsubishi announces some new and updated 2021 models for our edification. Will anyone notice? Well, you’re reading this so at least one of you will.
Understanding Mitsubishi doesn’t mean it’s tanking. Actually, sales in the US have increased for the last seven years. And we now know it is aware of the big SUV and crossover market here because it has decided to debut a new Outlander SUV sometime next year. That’s news because the current model has been hanging on for almost 10 years.
In a bold statement, Mitsubishi is going big
In a bold statement, Mitsubishi is going big, “The all-new next-generation Outlander will be bigger, bolder and better than ever before, and will be the quietest and best-equipped Mitsubishi ever sold in the U.S. Completely redesigned and reimagined in every way, the new Outlander will incorporate the latest Mitsubishi design language, with a bold, aggressive, and distinctive appearance. Loaded with technology and significant interior refinements, this game-changing vehicle will surprise many.”
While sounding impressive, remember that to compete in this market Mitsubishi really needs to do all of the things it is touting. Applied to a segment leader this would be huge stuff. But improving on the existing Outlander wouldn’t take much. Still, we will be anxiously anticipating this new 2022 Outlander when it’s revealed next year. But Mitsubishi has more news.
The lambasted Mirage will see updates including this redesigned exterior
The lambasted Mirage will see updates including this redesigned exterior. As one of the cheapest new cars you can slide into it does serve a purpose in the overall scheme of things. “Mirage has never looked richer or been better equipped,” the company says. It’s interesting the release uses the word “richer” rather than exciting, better, sporting, or some other such word. Not that it is any of those but richer just seems an odd word to market a car with.
The Eclipse Cross will also get an update for 2021. Both the front and rear fascias, infotainment system, and interior appointments will see new designs. It must be noted that Mitsubishi, self-aware as it is, has chosen to market the Eclipse Cross by stating it “offers an unconventional design, created for those who tread their own path.”
Quirky is always better than derivative or bland
Some have been critical of the Eclipse Cross styling, especially the rear fascia. We say “to each his own.” From the front or side, it’s a pretty generic crossover. So maybe Mitsubishi designers felt compelled to spice things up a bit in the rear? Quirky is always better than derivative or bland.
We’d like to think this latest announcement is meant to launch a new Mitsubishi determined to override its past performance. But rumors persist that it is bowing out of North America. Time will tell but competition is a good thing, especially for the consumer.
