Imagine this: you’re sitting in your first-ever job interview at a local Subway, nervously answering questions, hoping you don’t fumble too badly. Then out of nowhere—BAM! The entire building shakes, and glass shatters. You glance over, and what do you see? Your mom’s BMW i3 hybrid has just plowed through the front of the Subway restaurant. Yeah, that’s going to be hard to explain.

According to the Redmond Police Department, that’s exactly what happened to one poor Oregon kid. They were mid-interview when Mom’s BMW smashed through the glass front of the building, landing just a few feet away. So, how did this happen? Well, it turns out the mom fell asleep while waiting for her child to finish up. And while dozing off, her foot hit the accelerator.

Now, I get it—it’s October, maybe it was chilly. Maybe she wanted to keep the heat running. But why wasn’t the car in park? That’s the real kicker. My guess? The hybrid BMW i3 probably had its aggressive “one pedal” driving mode engaged. This feature slows the car down when you take your foot off the accelerator, thanks to regenerative braking. Sounds convenient, right? Well, it can also lead to some bad habits. The driver might’ve gotten used to just taking her foot off the gas and letting the car stop itself without actually putting it in park or using the parking brake. Spoiler alert: that’s a terrible idea.

It’s easy to imagine how this mistake turned into a full-blown disaster. One tap of the accelerator while sleeping, and the Redmond Subway branch was suddenly the chain’s newest drive-thru.

Thankfully, no one was injured. Lieutenant Curtis Chambers of the Redmond Police Department even joked, “RPD is hopeful the interview otherwise went well and the kid got the job!” If they did, let’s hope someone else will be dropping them off for work from now on.
