The car’s name comes from founder Ettore Bugatti’s nickname for his personal car, a Type 57C Atlantic painted all black. The Atlantic 57C was a front-engine grand touring luxury car far ahead of its time. Ettore built the first prototype’s body panels out of magnesium to save weight. Because it was impossible to weld, he joined the pieces with a single, riveted dorsal fin.

The car was commissioned by Ferdinand Piech who, sadly, died before it was finished. His family paid the $18.68 million that had been agreed upon and took delivery anyway. The car is not—despite rumors to this effect—owned by Portugese soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo.
