We can’t all drive a multi-million-dollar hypercar. But we can all dream we do. “What is the most expensive car in the world?” might seem like a simple question. But the answer is not so straightforward. So check out the most expensive advertised production car, the most expensive rumored custom car, and the most expensive classic car in the world.

What is the most expensive car in the world?

The most expensive production car in the world is Bugatti’s one-of-a-kind 2019 special edition called “La Voiture Noire.”

Bugatti has only built 400 Chiron hypercars since introducing the chassis. But now the brand is moving on and celebrating the mid-engine Chiron with several special editions. One was the 2019 one-off: La Voiture Noire.

The car’s name comes from founder Ettore Bugatti’s nickname for his personal car, a Type 57C Atlantic painted all black. The Atlantic 57C was a front-engine grand touring luxury car far ahead of its time. Ettore built the first prototype’s body panels out of magnesium to save weight. Because it was impossible to weld, he joined the pieces with a single, riveted dorsal fin.

One distinctive element of La Voiture Noire is a retro dorsal fin. Though it is a mid-engine car, it features a long front deck, similar to the 57C Atlantic.

The car was commissioned by Ferdinand Piech who, sadly, died before it was finished. His family paid the $18.68 million that had been agreed upon and took delivery anyway. The car is not—despite rumors to this effect—owned by Portugese soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo.

What is the most expensive classic car in the world?

With a predicted price tag of $114 million, the Bugatti type 57SC Atlantic is probably the most expensive classic car of all time.

It’s fitting that the classic Bugatti “La Voiture Noire” is based upon is the world’s most expensive classic car. Either three or four Bugatti Type 57C/57SC coupes were ever made, and only three survive to this day. Experts claim that the original La Voiture Noire would be worth $114 million if it went up for sale today. But we’ll never know because the owner isn’t parting with it.

It is a bit difficult to estimate the most expensive classic car ever, because, like the 57C, many of them aren’t for sale. Others have changed hands in private deals, and we’ll never know what someone paid for them.

What is the most expensive custom car in the world?

Rumors also swirl around the modern custom car world. But Motor 1 has a hunch that the most expensive custom ever produced was the $28 million Rolls Royce Boattail.

Rolls Royce actually has an in-house “coachbuilding” or customization program for its wealthiest customers. One product was an extravagant purpose-built coupe. The “Boat Tail” has a wooden rear end in the approximate shape of a small boat—just like the Rolls Royces of yesteryear. But that’s not all.

Instead of a trunk, the Rolls Royce Boat Tail has a pair of butterfly doors that reveal a full picnic set. The convertible coupe carries folding chairs, a table, a beach umbrella, and even a champagne chiller. This is a modern Rolls Royce the likes of Jay Gatsby would enjoy immensely.

Rumor has it that Jay-Z and Beyonce are the connoisseurs who had this luxurious Rolls Royce commissioned. But as the couple have yet to confirm this, their ownership is still just a rumor.
