Fuel-sipping is where it’s at these days, which means fewer stops at the gas station. Many drivers think that going all-electric is the only way to be environmentally conscious but that’s not the case. Interestingly enough, Consumer Reports’ list of SUVs with the highest fuel economy ratings consists of both traditional gas-driven vehicles and hybrids. Based on CR’s testing, the most fuel-efficient SUVs in 2020 belong to the Toyota organization: the 2020 Lexus UX and 2020 Toyota RAV4.

2020 Lexus UX

Starting price: $32,300

CR MPG: Overall 37 mpg / City 32 / Hwy 42 mpg

The Lexus UX tops CR’s list of the most fuel-efficient SUVs. In fact, fuel-efficiency and premium comforts are what this luxury crossover is known for. This SUV has an elegant yet sporty exterior and you can choose between two powertrains. There’s the standard 169-hp turbocharged 2-liter four-cylinder engine or the 175-hp hybrid version. The entry-level UX 200 is only available in front-wheel-drive while the UX 250h hybrid has an all-wheel-drive option available.

As far as speed goes, the UX isn’t the fastest in its class because of its lower power but that translates to better fuel economy. The UX isn’t exactly a thrilling ride but it does feel quite smooth and pleasant on the road. In typical Lexus fashion, the UX’s interior cabin is swanky and comfortable which complements its driving experience.

The UX offers plenty of standard and additional tech options including a wifi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Waze, and the list goes on and on. Advanced safety technology also comes standard on the UX. This SUV’s high-tech options might be its most luxurious elements. Although, managing the infotainment features may take some getting used to.

2020 Toyota RAV4

Starting price: $25,950

CR MPG: Overall 37 mpg / City 32 / Hwy 41 mpg

Toyota’s new design elements for the RAV4 has only made this SUV more popular. We love its sporty and fun exterior which is even bolder. There’s only one engine available and that is a 203-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder. Some may think that it’s not powerful enough, but that once again contributes to its overall fuel economy.

The hybrid version of the 2020 RAV4 has also generated a great deal of excitement this year. With the RAV4 hybrid, you will get even more fuel efficiency and practicality. It has an estimated electric range of 39 miles before going back to its gas engine.

One of the best things about the RAV4 is its available trim levels which range from the standard LE option up to the TRD Off-Road version. Each trim level offers plenty of comforts and it handles bumps with ease. The standard interior fabric is soft and inviting. There are also a bunch of options to make the cabin feel more luxurious like leather trimmings and different color accents.

Standard safety features on the RAV4 are also pretty impressive. These include automatic emergency braking, drowsy driver detection, and lane-keep assist. The RAV4 has earned a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Its also been honored as a Top Safety Pick by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
