When you think about Jeep one SUV probably comes to mind. The Jeep Wrangler is the iconic model that launched the brand. However, it’s not the most popular Jeep SUV in the lineup. A more refined model has better sales. 

It feels weird asking the Jeep Wrangler to step aside, but it’s not the most popular Jeep SUV in the lineup. It was outsold by the more refined Jeep Grand Cherokee. Plus, the Wrangler didn’t even come close to matching its figures. 

Car and Driver provided a list of the top 25 best-selling vehicles in 2023. I’m glad that the Jeep Wrangler made the list, but it had fewer sales than expected. Also, the Ford Bronco didn’t make the list. 

The Wrangler came in 22nd place and sold 156,581 models in 2023. This is a 14% sales decrease compared to 2022. However, the Wrangler was refreshed for 2024, so that may help it rebound. 

Then, the Jeep Grand Cherokee landed in 10th place, 12 spots ahead of the Wrangler. It sold 244,595 models, so it beat the Wrangler by 88,014 units. It received a 10% sales increase compared to 2022.

But what draws people to the Grand Cherokee over the Wrangler? The 2023 Wrangler has an MSRP of $31,195. This is for the basic two-door model which might be a little too spartan for some drivers. 

The 2023 Grand Cherokee has an MSTP of $40,035. It’s significantly more expensive than the base Wrangler. However, at least it comes with four doors and has a rear seat that’s much easier to access. 

Plus, the Grand Cherokee is one of the most refined Jeep SUV models. It has a quieter interior and smoother ride than the Wrangler. Its comfort is only bested by the luxurious Jeep Grand Wagoneer. 

People don’t lose much capability when going for the Grand Cherokee over the Wrangler either. Both are highly capable, trail-rated models. But the Wrangler is better for extreme off-roading challenges. 

Perhaps drivers are considering the Grand Cherokee for its ability to provide more comfort on the way to the off-roading trails.
