The numbers are out for the first half of 2022, and Kelley Blue Book tallied up the most popular SUVs. Out of the 25 best sellers, the 2022 Subaru Outback and the Subaru Forester were the only options from the brand to make the list.

Kelley Blue Book ranked the 25 most popular SUVs of 2022 so far, with various automakers on the list. The 2022 Subaru Outback was the only option from Subaru that made the list of most popular SUVs of 2022. With extra ground clearance, off-road capability, and standard all-wheel drive, why did it only sell 77,341 units?

That landed it in 12th place out of 25, which is still pretty good. Kelley Blue Book reviewed the 2022 Subaru Outback and found plenty of positives to report. The experts found that the Outback is practical, and the standard all-wheel drive is a big plus.

In addition to those features, Subaru equipped the Outback with many driver assistance features. Forward collision warning (FCW), lane-departure warning (LDW), automatic emergency braking (AEB), and more are all standard. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave it the Top Safety Pick Plus award.

Barely making the top 25 most popular SUVs of 2022, the Subaru Forester came in at spot 22. Subaru moved 50,937 units of the Forester so far this year. However, Kelley Blue Book thinks pretty highly of this sport utility vehicle. It recently made the list of the lowest five-year cost-to-own SUVs, with a five-year cost-to-own price of around $39,473. That’s a savings of $1,957 compared to the segment average.

FCW, LDW, and AEB are all standard, and the 2022 Forester also received the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus award. The Forester is a pretty capable SUV no matter what you might throw at it.

Subaru only has four vehicles in its lineup that it considers an SUV. Toyota has five sport utility vehicles, and Ford has around seven. Ford also has the most vehicles on the Kelley Blue Books list, with five choices in the top 25. These are the Ford Explorer, Escape, Bronco Sport, Bronco, and Edge.

What other sport utility vehicles made “best of” the list?

On the list of most popular SUVs of 2022, the Toyota RAV4 came in first. Toyota managed to sell 200,885 units in the first half of the year. The RAV is available in a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid which is called the Toyota RAV4 Prime. With three powertrain options to choose from, it isn’t surprising that Toyota sold so many.

Toyota had three SUVs on the list. The RAV4, Highlander, and 4Runner were all in Kelley Blue Book’s top 25. The Highlander was the third best seller on the list, with Toyota moving 117,403 units of the SUV. Even with all of the semiconductor chip shortages and problems, Toyota also manages to sell 66,829 units of the 4Runner.

Perhaps one of the issues is that Subaru makes SUVs that last a long time. That means you might not see return customers for a few years, but owners have been pretty pleased with the Subaru sport utility vehicles. The most popular SUVs of 2022 include only two Subarus, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take a second look at the Outback and Forester models.
