Get ready to celebrate an underdog! The most popular used SUV isn’t the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V, but those are good guesses. The used option that people buy the most is actually the Chevrolet Equinox. 

Surprise, the Chevrolet Equinox ranks as the most popular used SUV. You may have expected the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V to win because they’re more popular when new. However, the Equinox must have an edge on the competition. 

iSeeCars analyzed over 9.2 million used car sales during the past five years (2018 – 2022) to determine each model’s share of the used car sales market. 

The Ford F-150 is the most popular used vehicle overall making up 3.3% of one to five-year-old used car sales. The Chevy Sivlerado1500 came in second with 2.6%. 

Then you’ll find the Chevrolet Equinox in third place at 2.1%. It actually outranked the Ram 1500, which dropped to fourth place. 

The Toyota RAV4 is in seventh place with 1.7% and the Honda CR-V is in eleventh place with 1.4%. But how does the Chevy Equinox compare?

Does it have better sales due to being popular or are fewer RAV4 and CR-V models available? People could be holding on to them longer. 

Well, it turns out that the Equinox is extremely reliable. The 2022 Equinox earned a reliability rating of 90 out of 100 from J.D.Power. The 2022 RAV4 got an 81 and the 2022 CR-V earned an 82. 

Scores between 81 and 90 are above average while anything between 91 and 100 is best. The Equinox is one point away from being in the best category. 

The average Equinox model is expected to last between 200,000 and 250,000 miles, but some examples have made it past 300,000 and 400,000 miles. It also has an annual average repair cost of $537, while most new SUVs hover around $600. 

So, the Chevrolet Equinox could be the most popular used SUV because it’s affordable, has low maintenance cost, and has a stellar reliability rating.
