Most Reliable Full-Size Truck Isn’t a Ford or Ram, Says JD Power
The Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 have a history of dependability. These two full-size pickup trucks have a much-deserved reputation for running strong for many miles and years. However, according to J.D. Power, the most reliable full-size truck isn’t either of these models. It’s the GMC Sierra 1500.
GMC Sierra 1500 is the most reliable full-size pickup truck, according to JD Power
Reliability is a crucial factor for vehicles, especially for full-size pickup trucks, which typically have large and complicated engines that are more susceptible to issues. A reliable truck has multiple benefits, including less frequent and severe repairs, which translate to lower ownership costs. Other benefits include greater longevity and optimal performance and safety.
For full-size truck reliability, the best choice isn’t the Ford F-150 or Ram 1500, says J.D. Power. The most reliable full-size truck is the GMC Sierra 1500. Earlier this year, the data analytics company unveiled its 2023 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which honored the most reliable models for each vehicle segment. And for the full-size pickup truck segment, the GMC Sierra 1500 earned the top spot — and the Toyota Tundra placed second. Neither the Ford F-150 nor the Ram 1500 were honored.
Why is the GMC Sierra 1500 the best full-size truck in the 2023 Vehicle Dependability Study?
J.D. Power is one of the most trusted authorities for reliability analysis. Its annual Vehicle Dependability Study is closely watched by automotive consumers and critics alike.
For the 2023 Vehicle Dependability Study, J.D. Power collected thousands of surveys from vehicle owners over the previous year. In these surveys, owners reported issues in various problem areas. This includes driving experience, driving assistance, features, displays, controls, powertrain, exterior, interior, climate system, and seats.
The GMC Sierra 1500 had the least number of issues in these problem areas, so J.D. Power named it the most reliable full-size pickup truck. All other full-size trucks, including the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500, had more problems, so the Sierra 1500 earned the top spot.
What’s new for the 2023 Sierra 1500?
GMC infused the Sierra 1500 with greater off-road prowess for the 2023 model year with the new AT4X AEV Edition model. The AT4X AEV is ready for wilderness excursions with a range of off-road features. This includes steel bumpers with winch capability, boron steel skid plates, a steel transfer case, 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, and off-road rocker panel protectors. Also, the AT4X AEV has stylish gloss-black 18-inch AEV Salta wheels.
Additionally, the 2023 Sierra 1500 offers an upgraded Duramax 3.0-liter Turbo-Diesel engine — with an increase of 10% in horsepower and 7.6% in torque. Plus, there are three new exterior paint color options: Deep Bronze Metallic, Volcanic Red Tintcoat, and Sterling Metallic. Other 2023 changes include the Graphite Edition being newly available for the Pro trim and new 22-inch ultra-bright machined wheels for the luxurious Denali Ultimate trim.
According to J.D. Power, the GMC Sierra 1500 is a full-size pickup truck with outstanding reliability. It bests all other full-size trucks on the most reliable list, including the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500.
