MotorTrend’s Best Used Pickup Trucks to Buy Aren’t Surprising
Shopping for a new vehicle can be a challenging process. Shopping for a used one can prove even more complicated, with all the risks that come along with it. MotorTrend put together a list of the best ones to buy for those requiring a used pickup truck. They are specific model years, just the best make and models that are consistently reliable for a long time. You might not expect some trucks on this list, but the best used pickup trucks to buy aren’t surprising.
5. Toyota Tundra is one of MotorTrend’s best used pickup trucks
While it isn’t typically competing with other top models like the F-150 or Ram 1500, the Tundra does well for itself. According to MotorTrend, the 1999-2006 Toyota Tundra’s 4.7-liter V8 engine gives it tons of value. If you’re looking for some raw pickup truck power, these older Tundra models offer plenty for an affordable price. However, those looking for a long-lasting truck might consider the 2007-2013 generation. Moreover, these Toyota pickups received a redesign and gained the automaker’s incredible 381 horsepower 5.7-liter V8. Opting for this generation grants owners similar towing, hauling, and racing ability to popular Ford, Ram, and Chevy trucks.
4. Ram 2500/3500 Cummins Turbodiesel I-6
Unfortunately, if you’re buying used and looking for an affordable deal, look elsewhere. Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks with Cummins Turbodiesel engines hold their value so well they’re often sold for nearly as much as a new model with six figures on the odometer. However, those looking for long-lasting pickup truck value look no further. There’s a reason these models hold their value. As MotorTrend put it, “the engine will pull just about anything you ask it to until the truck falls apart around it.” Older Ram 2500 and 3500 models have a 5.9-liter Cummins under the hood, but starting in 2007, they switched over to a 6.7-liter version.
3. Ford Super Duty
According to MotorTrend, the gasoline version of the Ford Super Duty is the way to go. The publication recommends avoiding the diesel versions because of blown head gaskets, faulty turbos, and other problems. Shopping for a later model Super Duty is a more intelligent decision overall. In 2005, Ford switched the Super Duty truck to a new front suspension and a Dana 60 in the 4×4 models, allowing tighter turning. Once you enter into the 2011 model year, the F-250 and F-350 Super Duty received an updated interior, grille, and more. Lastly, it gained a thicker, more muscular frame and a 6.2-liter V8 alongside the 6.8-liter Triton V10.
2. Toyota Tacoma
The inclusion of the Toyota Tacoma on a list of best used models is no surprise. When looking for one of the best used pickup trucks, it’ll likely be at the top of most recommendations. Toyota’s midsize is a safe, reliable, off-road-ready truck that will last a long time. In addition, they’re comfortable and usually affordable, especially when buying a used model. Unfortunately, like the Ram 2500 and 3500 Cummins trucks, Tacomas tend to hold their value pretty well. It can be challenging to find a great deal on a used Tacoma, but it does happen. However, many will have 100,000 miles or more and come close to the same price as a new one. That’s why it’s not surprising to see the Tacoma on this list; it’s so good people will pay a premium to own even an older one.
1. Ford F-150 is MotorTrend’s best used pickup truck to buy
Surprise, surprise, the Ford F-150 is the best used pickup truck to buy. It’s been the best-selling truck in America for as long as most can remember, so why wouldn’t it be? While most model years are promising, more recent generations will be more appealing to those in need of modern features. All Ford F-150 pickups offer solid capability for towing, hauling, and whatever else a truck needs to do. MotorTrend recommends the 2009-2014 F-150. Not only is the older generation more affordable, but it also doesn’t use the newer aluminum body construction, which MT dislikes. Finally, engine options include a 3.7-liter V6, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, 4.6-liter, 5.4-liter, and 6.2-liter for Raptor models for this generation of F-150. To say there are plenty of engine options for everyone would be an understatement.
We aren’t surprised by MotorTrend’s best used pickup trucks to buy
If we had to guess anyone’s recommendations when buying a truck, the ultra-popular models would come first. Most notably, the Ford F-150 and Toyota Tacoma, which MT placed at the top of this list. Additionally, Ram models with Cummins Turbodiesel engines, plus the Ram 1500, are nearly as popular. However, reliability and the ability to last a long time come into effect when buying used. For those reasons, the Ford F-150, Toyota Tacoma, Ford Super Duty trucks, Ram 2500/3500, and the Toyota Tundra are the best options. Is anyone surprised by MotorTrend’s best used pickup trucks to buy?
