The 2022 Toyota RAV4 is a staple in the compact crossover segment and the TRD Off-Road trim makes it a competent competitor. We recently covered that the off-road-worthy trim level is great for tackling the outdoors, but some prospective buyers may be curious about what kind of practicality it brings to the table. As such, I decided to throw an electric bike into its cargo area just to see if it would fit.

Can you fit a bike in the 2022 Toyota RAV4?

Yes, you can. In fact, there’s a good amount of space in the 2022 Toyota RAV4’s cargo hold and then some. According to Toyota, the RAV4 has up to 69.8 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats folded down. Of course, that number doesn’t mean much on its own, but in comparison to the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox’s 63.9 cubic feet, you can see that the RAV4 is far more spacious.

After stuffing my Aventon Solterra e-bike into the back of the RAV4, I noticed that there’s plenty of room for other smaller stuff around it. You can even store stuff, like groceries or clothes, behind the front seats if needed. There’s even a space next to the backseat cushion to put wedge the handlebar so that the bike doesn’t move. What’s even better is that the RAV4 TRD comes with an all-weather cargo mat that also covers the rear seatbacks, so there’s no need to worry about scratching.

How does the RAV4’s cargo area compare to the Honda CR-V and Chevy Equinox?

The RAV4’s cargo area compares well against its competitors. If you’re shopping for a compact crossover, then you’re likely comparing the 2022 RAV4 to rivals like the Honda CR-V and Chevy Equinox. I conducted the same cargo test using the same bike with the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox and it fit just as well. It was surprising considering the Equinox’s cargo area measures 63.9 cubic feet compared to the RAV4’s 69.8.

What about the 2022 Honda CR-V? It’s actually the largest among the three crossovers. Honda’s best-selling SUV has a cargo area that measures a whopping 75.8 cubic feet. That’s definitely more than enough space for a medium-sized bike, if not larger. However, if you’re planning on hauling more than one bike, then you may want to get either a trunk-mounted bike rack or a roof rack.

The Toyota RAV4 has many other storage spaces as well

In addition to a cavernous cargo area, the 2022 Toyota RAV4 has plenty of smaller storage spaces in the front seat area. There are large cubby spaces in the doors and a decent-sized center-console storage spot. There are even small storage spaces in the dashboard that work well for pencils or whatever other long, skinny things you can put there.

While the RAV4 is considered “compact” there’s no shortage of useful space for all of your stuff, large or small. Also, the rear seatback is a 60:40 split so it can accommodate one rear-seat passenger while transporting larger or longer items in the cargo area. Whatever configuration you choose to use, there’s no denying that the RAV4 can hold almost anything you put in it, even a mountain bike.
