Starting with the baseline trim, the 2022 Mazda CX-5 S, Mazda’s gas-powered line of impressive SUVs for an affordable price, has a little bit for every driver’s need. Thanks to its four-cylinder engine, the base model gets 26 mpg, all-wheel drive, and has 187 horsepower under the hood. With a six-speed transmission and enough space for five people, the CX-5 is an ideal middle-ground for drivers who want it all.

The i-ACTIV AWD smart-driving system used to be reserved for pricier models. Now, it comes equipped on every CX-5 model sold. With it, drivers get Mazda’s Intelligent Drive Select technology with custom modes for every environment and surface. If that’s not enough, the Traffic Jam Assist technology, Radar Cruise Control, and speed-steering assistance help keep you safe when drivers are in a bind. 

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 S baseline trim

Given its futuristic design and reliable performance, the 2022 Mazda CX-5 S model is a surprisingly comprehensive package for a base model, according to Car and Driver. Drivers get more than the standard Turbo engine with All Wheel Drive and the safety features that previously went to more expensive models. At just $27,125, it’s hard to find a comparable model that offers this much bang for the buck. 

Car and Driver have long lauded the CX-5’s standard four-cylinder engine for its ability to stop and go with relative ease. If anything, the car’s transition from idle to the speed limit can be deceptively quick. Add to that its precision steering and smooth ride, even on the harshest roads, and it’s easy to see why Mazda’s popular line gets the accolades it does. 

While the Mazda CX-5 line offers plenty of attractive options, It’s not the only option for crossover SUVs, and buyers who want something different should know where to look to fill these needs. 

Competitors of the CX-5

Crossover SUVs have flooded the market in recent years, and for a good reason. They combine cargo space with portability and let your family sit comfortably without the need for an oversized garage. MotorTrend notes how Mazda has three separate lines of compact crossover SUVs, with the CX-30 offering the basics and the CX-9 providing a larger crossover option.

However, not everyone wants a Mazda, and its competitors offer buyers similar cars and benefits. The Kia Sportage is a favorite value option for a lower price, and the Subaru Forester is one of MotorTrend’s best-rated options in the field. The Honda CR-V is a tad pricier than the CX-5 but gives users more space and mileage with every full tank. Meanwhile, the Toyota RAV4 offers more space with less reliable performance. 

The Mazda CX-5 is a great middle-ground for compact SUV drivers. As such, its extensive line of options offers good variety at reasonable prices. While more money means better features, the base model is an impressive feat unto itself.
