According to VW, you’ll still have quite the hatchback on your hands with its 4Motion AWD with Active Control and Driving Mode Selection feature. This performance hatch comes with a four-cylinder Turbo 2.0-liter engine. That’s the rumble under the hood that produces 315 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. Those who love to drive will appreciate the standard six-speed manual transmission. All of these are designed to make even the baseline model Golf R a pavement-chomping performance beast.

Inside, there is plenty of comfort and convenience to enjoy, too. There’s a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, Harman Kardon premium audio, and a 10-inch touchscreen with navigation. Again, this entry-level hatchback (that certainly doesn’t feel entry-level) will start at $44,740.

What’s included with the Golf R’s 20th Anniversary Edition?

New for 2023, the Volkswagen Golf R comes in a limited series for its 20th Anniversary Edition. The aesthetics are all enhanced for this version, including the 19-inch gloss black, multi-spoke alloy wheels with performance tires. There are gloss black mirror caps and “20 Years” logos on the B-Pillars and the mirror puddle light projection. You also get this Golf R with the iconic “R” logo on the hatch, fenders, and grille. The powertrain is the same, according to VW‘s spec sheet in the build-out form, which isn’t going to hurt anyone’s feelings. The starting MSRP for the Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition is $45,390.
