Don’t Worry Muscle Car Lovers- You Still Have Options in 2024
If you’re a fan of naturally aspirated and supercharged V8s, you’ve noticed the dwindling supply of new-age muscle. Still, even with the departure of the segment’s most potent muscle cars over the last few years, Mopar maniacs and Ford fanatics alike still have options to satiate their horsepower hunger in 2024.
There are plenty of muscle car alternatives in 2024, even after the discontinuation of the Dodge Challenger
Muscle cars employ a familiar formula. Take a vehicle with near-supercar levels of power and torque, and slap on a much more affordable price tag. It’s stood as the American workaday hero of the car market. Tragically, the domestic market lost what is arguably the most true-to-form muscle car since the pre-Malaise era dreamboats ruled the road stoplight-to-stoplight.
I’m, of course, referring to the LA-platform Dodge Challenger, a massive, two-door coupe with upwards of 1,025 horsepower in its top offering. However, even with the R/T Scat Pack and SRT Hellcat-shaped hole in the market, muscle car fans still have options.
Make and model | Horsepower | Starting price |
Chevrolet Camaro 1SS | 455 HP | $43,895 |
Ford Mustang GT | 486 HP | $44,055 |
Ford Mustang Dark Horse | 500 HP | $61,830 |
BMW M2 | 453 HP | $64,195 |
Nissan Z Sport | 400 HP | $44,110 |

- 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse
- 2024 BMW M2
- 2024 Nissan Z Sport
Fortunately, the Chevrolet Camaro is around for one last model year before General Motors discontinues the modern muscle car. That means 455 horsepower courtesy of the model’s naturally aspirated 6.2L V8. Make no mention of the Camaro ZL1 and its explosive 650-horsepower mill.
However, even with the incipient departure of the Camaro and the still-warm grave of the Challenger, Ford launched the seventh-generation Mustang. Better yet, the Blue Oval promised that it would continue to produce the Ford Mustang with a V8 under the hood for as long as possible.
Finally, the definition of a muscle car is a bit, well, murky. As such, some foreign models can comfort car shoppers as the segment dwindles. For instance, the 2024 BMW M2 and Nissan Z Sport both cross the 400-horsepower threshold. Better yet, by sending their considerable power reserves to the rear wheels, the German and Japanese muscle coupes easily instigate tail-happy slides. Sounds muscle car-esque to me.
