When it comes to high-margin, high-volume products like Chevy’s pickups we wonder why it staggers the release of certain configurations? Especially as sedans continue to be axed it needs pickups and SUVs to make up for the gaps left by Malibus and Impalas. Chevy had pre-production single-cab pickups at the long-lead for the new pickups last year. Or was it the year before? It becomes a blur and that’s the problem. When you want a certain pickup you want it and want it now. But whatever was involved with the mysterious delay the Chevy/GMC single-cab pickups are finally available.

The Chevy/GMC single-cabs are definitely for the working crowd

Yeah, we know the single-cab pickups tend to be for the working crowd. They’ve become more like a fleet vehicle than a Suburban or Silverado 1500. But that doesn’t make them any less of a moneymaker for GM. Both the 2500 HD and 3500 Dually can be configured with the single-, double-, or crew-cab configuration. 

As such they come with the double-whooptie, super-strange fascia. The jury is still out on this part of the 2500/3500 package but we’ll see how it affects sales. We think it won’t matter as these are work-trucks that deal a lot less in windshield-cowboy antics and more as real-world trucks. 

The WT and LT trim levels are not as glitzy as their Silverado brethren

Two trim levels are available. The WT and LT. Not as glitzy as a Silverado, they offer decent though not excellent amenities. Packaged in the 3500 with a 6.6-liter Duramax diesel the Dually offers a maximum towing capacity of 35,500 lbs. That’s a workhorse for sure. 

The Duramax features 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed automatic is the only transmission available with the diesel. But the diesel isn’t the only engine available. A 6.6-liter gas engine is also on the ticket. It comes with 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque. This is backed up with a six-speed automatic. Either one is available with four-wheel-drive. 

For the ultimate in truckness the 3500 Silverado Dually tops the list

For the ultimate in truckness the Silverado Dually has always been at the top of the heap. They’re especially prized by the horse crowd as somewhat of a status symbol. The single-cab Dually is the shortest dual-rear-wheel pickup Chevy and GMC offer. 

We’d still like to see a single-cab in the 1500 configuration with the Silverado trim option. Maybe with a slightly higher output, it could be a limited edition model to make it exclusive and desirable in the vein of the SS 454 versions from back in the day.

All of the different configurations and options can be crunched on Chevy’s website. A base 2500 Silverado HD single-cab in the bae WT trim and a 6.6-liter gas engine will set you back for $35,695. The LT level trim puts the price just under $40,000. If you want either with a diesel you can add $11,990 in WT trim and $9,890 in LT trim. 

As GM is releasing this info now in the midst of the coronavirus crisis we can only assume these are now available. We would, however, check with your local dealer before making that trip to test drive one.
