The new seventh-generation Ford Mustang, the S650, is a crucial staying action in a market careening toward electrification and hybridization. Specifically, the new Mustang comes on the heels of the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro throwing in the towel. However, Ford chose to step things up with the most powerful GT ever, the new S650 2024 Ford Mustang GT, which packs an angry 5.0L V8 and big horsepower. Check out the latest and last generation of internal combustion engine (ICE) GTs and their rampaging ponies.

How much horsepower will the 2024 Mustang GT have?

The new 2024 Ford Mustang will produce 480 horsepower. That’s just as much as the S550 generation Bullitt and Mach 1, but those Mustangs are special edition pony cars. As a result, the 2024 Ford Mustang will be the most powerful GT in the model’s history. Moreover, Car and Driver says the 2024 S650 GT will offer a performance exhaust system that takes the horsepower figure up to 486.

The outgoing S550 Ford Mustang produced 450 horsepower from its 5.0L Coyote V8. That’s down from the midcycle horsepower figure of 460. While the Ford Mustang doesn’t have the power of the Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack, it’s enough to motivate the GT to 60 in around four seconds. Frankly, Ford says the 2018 GT Automatic could hit 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds.

How much will 2024 Mustang GT cost?

The new 2024 Ford Mustang GT will almost certainly have a comparable price tag to the outgoing model. The current 2023 Ford Mustang GT starts at around $39,740, just a hair below the $40,000 mark. Ford will likely keep the new V8-powered GT around that price point. However, those Mustang fanatics who insist on a special edition variation can opt for the race-ready Dark Horse

The new 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse produces 500 horsepower from its similarly sized mill. To accomplish the 500-horsepower goal, Ford used a crankshaft upgrade and forged internals. As a result, the Dark Horse is one of the only naturally aspirated Mustangs in the marque’s history with 100 horsepower per liter of displacement.

Will the 2024 Mustang have a V6?

The 2024 Ford Mustang will not include a V6 option. Instead, the marque will produce an EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3L four-cylinder option to round out the bottom of the Mustang’s trim offerings in addition to a 2024 Ford Mustang GT. Even the EcoBoost gets a power bump for the S650 generation; the 2024 Ford Mustang EcoBoost produces 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. That means every Ford Mustang gets a power bump for the 2024 model year.

Is the 2024 Mustang the last one?

The 2024 Ford Mustang is the start of the seventh generation model and maintains several favorites. First, the Mustang lineup retains a gas-powered V8 engine in the GT. Furthermore, in addition to surviving the great muscle car extinction of current times, the S650 generation maintains a manual transmission, making it one of the last accessible manual sports cars on the market, alongside cars like the Nissan Z and Toyota GR Supra.
