Achtung! Mercedes is quite serious about this year’s AMG GT. It’s sandwiched between the more commonplace E-Class and flagship S-Class, but it’s unequivocally the sportiest of the four-door bunch. The GT63 and GT63 S variants return this year to insert even more schnell into the lineup, leading the company to call it a “supercar for four.”

That’s a tall order for a car that must have 600 horsepower and a 0 to 60 mph in the three-second range. But all those track-inspired driving dynamics won’t fit the bill if you can’t sensibly meander to the grocery store or mount child seats. Is the AMG GT the best of the supercar and luxury car world?

The 2023 AMG GT’s ‘supercar’ performance specs

With 4,682 pounds of modern decadence to lug around, the AMG GT needs a lot of power—and it has. The 4.0-liter biturbo V8 puts down 575 horsepower and 590 pounds-feet of torque in the GT63, but 630 and 669, in the GT63 S, respectively. Both feature a nine-speed automatic transmission with a manual-shift mode and power going to all four wheels. That means a supercar-like 2.9-second 0 to 60 mph time in the GT63 S, which does the standing quarter mile in 11.1 seconds.

The supercar stats are based on engineering typically found in the supercar segment. For instance, the engine’s hot-V configuration features the turbochargers inside the engine to improve response time. A dry sump oil system allows the engine and, thus, the car to be lower to the road, improving lateral acceleration. With its clever, torque-distributing all-wheel drive system, the AMG GT, at nearly two-and-a-half tons with a driver at the helm, can achieve 1.03g on the skidpad.

The ‘for four’ part

The 2023 AMG GT63 is as much a “4-door coupe” as the Ferrari Purosangue isn’t an SUV. Marketing buzzwords aside, is it a practical car?

Much of the AMG GT’s interior is lifted from elsewhere in Mercedes’ lineup—but that’s not a bad thing. Yet, some of the amenities and accents detract from overall comfort. Car and Driver says the large center console “appears to have been” pulled from the GT sports car. While it and others—like the low roofline—sacrifice space and ergonomics, supercars are supposed to be a bit impractical, right?

Since the AMG GT is a hatchback, loading items into the car will be easier. Even though its 12.7 cubic feet of cargo space is relatively small, the rear seats do fold down. Featuring a five-seat layout as opposed to a more luxurious four-seat, it’s a welcome means of transportation for families. Yet, the options list can provide a rather nice piece of art deco furniture in the middle if needed. But even when parents decide to test that skidpad grip, all will sit in exciting comfort with aggressively bolstered seats.

How much is an AMG GT?

The entry-level GT43 begins just a hair under $100,000. While potential buyers gain one of the most luxurious sedans on sale today, that version is the relaxed, tuned-down 3.0-liter inline-six model. For supercar speed, the GT63 and 63 S have starting MSRPs nudging the supercar price bracket.

Although starting MSRPs could rise due to manufacturer warnings of limited availability, the GT63 starts north of $150,000. The extra power in the GT63 S is $21,000 more. That’s around about the price of the swansong Audi R8, but at least Mercedes has two more seats and LATCH points.

Is the AMG GT a ‘supercar for four?’

Oftentimes, sedans seem to take on all the looks of supercars without providing the substance to back it up. Aggressive front fascias, nifty LED lighting signatures, and red stitching on the steering wheel, to name a few. However, not many can go toe-to-toe with Europe’s best. Given its acceleration, in a straight line and laterally, mated with room for four in immense luxury and a tad of acceptable impracticality, the AMG GT is indeed a supercar for four.
