New Electric Ram 1500 Model Year Might Not Be 2024
Rumors of the new electric Ram 1500 offering up to a 700-mile range coming in 2024 with a starting price of about $45,000 have created quite the buzz around Ram’s future electric pickup truck. However, none of the information in the sentence above is confirmed. Sadly, most of it may not be true at all. So what do we know about the Ram 1500 EV?
When does the Ram 1500 EV truck come out?
Stellantis, Ram’s parent company, issued a press release in March 2022 that included two vague pictures of “the new Ram 1500 battery electric vehicle (BEV) pickup truck arriving in 2024.” The term “arriving in 2024” indicates that a 2025 Ram 1500 EV (BEV) will arrive someplace in 2024. However, that model year is not mentioned nor confirmed by any official source.
What is the estimated range for the new electric Ram 1500?
TFL Truck reported last year that Stellantis announced plans at its 2021 EV Day presentation to employ a series of four “modular platforms with similar electric powertrains.” These platforms range from small to medium to large, with the most robust “STLA Frame” platform carrying the weight of the forthcoming Ram 1500 BEV. These modular platforms allow the automaker to scale size and performance as needed for any vehicle under its umbrella. However, while there are reports of the STLA Frame capability reaching up to a 500-mile range, they are as of yet unproven and unconfirmed.
Another exciting, though unconfirmed, potential feature of the Ram 1500 BEV is a range extender. Ram hints at “onboard power” and a “paradigm breaker” technology for its new electric truck. However, a range extender may employ an onboard gasoline generator to recharge the batteries whenever needed.
What don’t we know about the 1500 BEV truck?
More recently, TFL Truck published an article clearing up some of the misinformation around the Ram 1500 BEV, some of which it also admits to spreading.
First, Stellantis has not released a starting price for the Ram 1500 BEV. While rumors of a $45,000 starting price circulate online, only time will tell if that price holds firm.
Rumored performance estimates ranging from a meager 201 horsepower up to 885 horsepower are also unsubstantiated. Although, it does seem likely that the eventual Ram 1500 BEV will offer available powertrains somewhere in that broad range.
You’ll have to wait for additional press releases if you’re curious about the Ram 1500 BEV’s available features and capabilities. However, it’s promising that at the Stellantis 2021 EV Day, brand CEO Mike Koval stated that even with “full knowledge of what our competitors are doing,” the future Ram 1500 BEV will surpass the capabilities of competitors’ electric pickup trucks. Still, as of yet, “no ironclad technical details like power, range, towing capacity or payload” are available.
Don’t believe everything you hear about the electric Ram pickup truck.
In the coming weeks, there will consistently be new rumors about the Ram 1500 BEV’s price, performance, features, and capabilities. While some will stand the test of time, many will fade away as new information becomes available. However, one thing is for sure, the electric pickup truck segment’s future is bright, with big names such as Ford, Chevy, and Ram entering the fray, as well as Tesla and upstarts like Rivian.
