Inside the New Engines Ford Is Offering in Its Super Duty Trucks
Automaker Ford has reigned supreme as America’s favorite truck maker. Its line of Super Duty trucks has set industry standards for years. But Ford’s latest 2020 Super Duty lineup is set up to be the most impressive of them all, with an all-new engine lineup. Here’s everything we know about Ford’s most powerful Super Duty engines yet.
The new Ford Super Duty trucks will come with new engines
From the moment Ford announced its plans with the newest 2020 F-Series heavy-duty trucks, the truck community has been on pins and needles. That’s because Ford has redesigned its Super Duty lineup with greater power and more capability than ever before. Behind this never-before-seen power are new and improved engine choices. According to Car and Driver, the 2020 Ford Super Duty lineup will now have “the most powerful engines and the highest payload and tow ratings in Super Duty history.”
New owners of the Ford Super Duty can choose between two completely new engines: one gas and one diesel. The new 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel engine will create 475 hp and 1,050 ft-lb of torque. The 7.3-liter V8 gas engine will put out 430 hp and 475 ft-lb of torque. Both of these engines take the title of being the most powerful engines Ford has ever built.
The new gas engine features new overhead-valve architecture, a forged steel crankshaft, and variable-valve timing port injection. The more powerful diesel engine is designed with a new 36,000-PSI fuel injection system, a redesigned turbocharger, and stronger-built components.
How Ford’s new engines raise the bar
According to a press release from Ford, the new Ford “Super Duty pickup raises the bar again” with its maximum towing capabilities. None of this would be possible without the power behind its latest engines. Even with its current standard gas-powered option, the Super Duty still has a best-in-class maximum payload capacity of 7,850 pounds.
But the new diesel engine is raising expectations for other truck makers. The power behind the new diesel engine provides “best-in-class maximum gooseneck towing of up to 37,000 pounds, best-in-class maximum fifth-wheel towing of 32,500 pounds and best-in-class maximum conventional towing of 24,200 pounds.”
Ford even uses the new engines to produce the most capable off-roading Super Duty ever. With the Tremor Off-Road Package, the 2020 Super Duty will be more than capable off-road. It can tow conventional trailers up to 15,000 pounds and 21,900 pounds for gooseneck trailers with the available diesel engine. Gas engines get an improved payload capacity of 4,210 pounds.
More improvements to Ford Super Duty trucks
Ford’s new engines are unsurprisingly paired with new transmissions and drivetrains. The updated, more powerful engines will now be paired to a new, heavy-duty 10-speed TorqShift automatic transmission, according to the Ford Motor Company. Drivers can select a variety of drive modes under this new transmission, including slippery, ECO, deep sand, snow, and tow/haul modes. This new transmission sits on an upgraded chassis that includes a variety of exterior and interior updates.
New Super Duty trucks will also offer Pro Trailer Backup Assist, as well as Trailer Reverse Guidance and other driver-assist features that make every job easier than ever. As with all other new Ford trucks, Super Duty pickups will come with FordPass Connect, Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities, and an impressive infotainment system.
On the exterior, 2020 Super Duty trucks will feature an improved front-end design that optimizes cooling and lighting performance. The lineup will also come with improved headlamps, new tailgate design, and a completely refreshed interior. According to Car and Driver, the 2020 Ford Super Duty will have a starting price of around $35,000.
