New Ford Mustang GT3 article highlights:

  • Ford unveiled a new Mustang GT3 race car for the FIA GT3 category at the 100th anniversary of Le Mans.
  • The new GT3, set to compete in FIA events in 2024, builds on the new S650 platform’s Mustang Dark Horse to include a derivation of the Coyote V8.
  • In addition to a wild new Ford Performance racing livery, the winged track car already has teams lining up to race it in the 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Ford’s sixth-generation Mustang will ride off into the sunset at the end of the 2023 model year. Moreover, the Mustang’s direct competitors are heading out of production. However, the Blue Oval’s pony car will return for a seventh generation with its most potent 5.0L V8s yet. Still, Ford isn’t stopping at road cars like the new Mustang Dark Horse. The Ford Mustang GT3 will take on FIA GT3 class races and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Is there a GT3 Mustang?

While the Ford Mustang is no stranger to racing, Ford hasn’t produced a factory-backed GT3 car in the pony car’s tenure– until now. The new 2024 Ford Mustang GT3 is set to take on the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2024.

Of course, a pony car with its sights on GT3 racing will need the suspension, aerodynamic profile, and brakes to handle the stresses of serious track work. Ford says the GT3 packs a custom short-long arm suspension, copious carbon fiber, and an all-new purpose-built aero package to glue the ‘Stang to the track.

Ford unveiled its new Mustang race car at the sacred grounds of Le Mans, France

Ford unveiled the new Mustang GT3 racer at Le Mans in France, just in time for the event’s hundredth anniversary. Breaking cover on the Blue Oval’s new brute revealed a new, brightly-colored Ford Performance livery and the most aggressive factory-backed Mustang aero package yet.

The Blue Oval seems set on expanding its presence at Le Mans beyond its past successes with the Ford GT. Ford Motor Company’s CEO, Jim Farley, is determined to see the GT3 participate in Le Mans. “It is not Ford versus Ferrari anymore. It is Ford versus everyone. Going back to Le Mans is the beginning of building a global motorsports business with Mustang,” Farley said.

Moreover, Ford says a race team has already stated its intent to race the new GT3 in 2024. Proton Competition, a German team, says it will take the Ford model to the FIA World Endurance Championship next year.

How much horsepower does a Mustang GT3 2024 have?

The new Ford Mustang GT3 packs a 5.4L derivation of the Coyote V8. According to Ford Media, M-Sport will build the GT3 engines, and they should produce much more horsepower than the Dark Horse’s 500 ponies.

Of course, power doesn’t help a race car if it can’t stay composed on a track. The new GT3 packs a dramatic new wing which appears to turn the vehicle into a light aircraft. However, the Mustang’s wing won’t lift the pony car to a cruising altitude. Instead, the massive swan-neck wing will undoubtedly multiply the Mustang’s downforce and allow it to corner much harder than the road-going Dark Horse.
