Do New Jeep Models Make it Easy to Ignore the Dodge Durango?
For more than two decades, the Dodge Durango has provided customers with an appealing choice for the midsize SUV segment. However, the Durango will soon come to an end. Stellantis, the parent company of Dodge and Jeep, recently announced that it will stop producing the Durango in 2024. Are you sad about the death of the Durango? What Jeep models are similar to the Dodge Durango?
For Dodge and Jeep, one of the benefits of sharing the same parent company is that they can share many of the same vehicle components and production facilities. The Jeep vehicle that is most similar to the Dodge Durango is the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee has a similar unibody platform as the Durango. This means that the same plant that produces the Durango can now produce the Grand Cherokee. As a result, Jeep will be able to produce many more Grand Cherokees, which is a higher selling model.
This week is important for the Grand Cherokee. Following the reveal of the longer 2021 Grand Cherokee L earlier this year, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee two-row model will make its debut on September 29, 2021. For the debut, Jeep will also unveil the Grand Cherokee 4xe. It’s the first plug-in hybrid model ever offered for the Grand Cherokee. Along with providing higher efficiency, the Grand Cherokee 4xe can drive on electric-only power for up to 21 miles.
Another Jeep model to consider instead of the Dodge Durango is the Jeep Cherokee, particularly if you’re looking for a smaller SUV. Also, the Cherokee has a lower starting price than the Grand Cherokee. If you desire the ultimate in Jeep luxury, then you may want to consider the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer.
Jeep plans to release many all-electric models by 2025
Another exciting thing about Jeep is its plans for electric vehicles. The automaker stated that it will release all-electric SUVs for each one of its model nameplates by 2025. Also, Jeep targets a rate of 70% of SUVs sold to be either electric or hybrid within the next several years.
Will Dodge ever make the Durango again?
As far as the Dodge Durango, it may not be gone forever. As seen with models like the Ford Bronco and Chevy Blazer, automakers can kill off their models, only to resurrect them in a new form years later.
Also, production of the Durango won’t cease until a few more years down the road. Customers can still buy a new Durango. Drivers that want a high-performance SUV can get the 2021 Durango SRT Hellcat or Durango R/T.
It’s not surprising that Jeep gave the Durango the ax. It is outdated and based on reviews — it has its fair share of problems. We’ll see what Dodge has in store for a Durango replacement model. Alternatively, give Jeep models like the Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, and Grand Wagoneer a closer look.
