New Jeep Models Are Struggling to Sell in These States
With the Jeep Grand Wagoneer making a luxurious statement, and the Wrangler 4xe taking the hybrid world by storm, Jeep seems to be at the top of their game. But sales-wise, they’ve been struggling quite a bit. In 2019, Jeep managed to sell nearly a million cars in the US, but in 2020, sales dipped to just under 800,000. And while sales for 2021 are predicted to match sales of last year, new Jeeps aren’t exactly flying off dealership lots.
Jeeps are the slowest-selling new car in 10 states
Those states include Arizona, California, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, New Jersey, North Dakota, South Carolina, and Virginia. But to understand the data provided by iSeeCars, you need to understand how it’s being measured. The search engine recorded the time it took between a certain Jeep model arriving to the dealership to the moment it’s sold. After collecting all those times, they took the average and came up with a number representing how many days it takes to sell that particular model.
For example: in Arizona, it takes 107 days on average to sell a Jeep Cherokee. And in Idaho, it takes 79 days on average to sell a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Those two are the slowest-selling cars in their particular state, though it doesn’t make jeep the slowest-selling car brand nationwide. Currently, the title of least sold car in the US belongs to Fiat, who haven’t even sold 2,000 cars in 2021 so far. In comparison, Jeep has sold over 400,000 units.
But that doesn’t mean they’re flying off dealership lots. In fact, one particular Jeep model is struggling to sell in more states than any other car model throughout the automotive world. The unfortunate title of slowest selling car in the most states goes to the Jeep Compas.
The Jeep Compas is the slowest-selling new car in six states
The Jeep Compas, a car Consumer Reports doesn’t recommend, is the slowest-selling new car in six different states. That’s more than any other model in America, including vehicles like the Kona EV and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. To clarify, that doesn’t mean Jeep sells fewer Compas models than Alfa sells Stelvio models. It just takes longer on average for a Compas to roll out the dealership.
The six states where Jeep Compas models struggle to compete are California, Connecticut, Illinois, New Jersey, South Carolina, and Virginia. At its best, a Jeep Compas is sold every 113 days on average in California. And at it’s worst, it takes an average of 301 days to get a Compas out the door in South Carolina. However, the slowest selling car across every state isn’t a Jeep, it’s a Volvo.
In Washington state, it takes 308 days to get a Volvo XC60 off the lot, longer than it takes any other car to sell in any other state. But despite not being on the bottom of the slowest-selling new cars list, Jeep is fairly close. And there are still two more states that aren’t particularly fond of the Jeep Renegade.
The Jeep Renegade is the slowest-selling new car in two states
I think my mother described the Jeep Renegade best many years ago. “The front end is all cute and cuddly, but the taillights look like dead eyes.” It’s a strange, unconventionally styled Jeep. And in Kansas and North Dakota, it’s not exactly a star-seller.
Provided, a Jeep Renegade in North Dakota sells much faster than any other Jeep model in any other state. On average, it takes a Renegade 70 days to go from stocked to sold. However, it’s a much different story in Kansas, where selling a Jeep Renegade takes 187 days. So while it might be the ugly duckling of the family, it’s not a complete sales slouch.
Though none of this data matters if you’re inclined to buy a Jeep, as the rate of sales likely won’t affect your decision. Though do be wary: if a car is struggling to sell in your state, there may be a reason behind it.
