The electric hypercar (SUV) is here. The Pandora’s Box of electric power has been opened, and there’s no getting all that instant torque back inside. The young EV startup Drako Motors is now promising its second fire-breathing EV after its amazing yet forgettable 1,200-hp electric sedan called the GTE sedan. The name of Drako’s electric SUV is “The Dragon,” which might be too fast this time. 

What is the Drako Motors Dragon? 

According to New Atlas, we’ve yet to see anything quite like the Dragon. The e-SUV makes a chest-crushing 2,000 hp, runs the quarter-mile faster than a Bugatti Chiron Super Sport, and can haul your family to the grocery store. 

As noted by New Atlas, the Drako GTE, the first car the startup made, was extremely exciting for a time. The 1,200-hp electric sedan was cool and even unique at first. Then more powerful and better-looking electric hypercars closely followed. Also not helping the GTE’s case is the fact that it debuted at the 2019 Pebble Beach car show. The GTE got fully buried in the weight of COVID. 

The Dragon, on the other hand, will be harder to forget, seeing as how it will debut as one of the most powerful cars in the world. Judging by the mysterious teaser images, this won’t only be a hypercar; it’ll be a useable SUV. Supposedly, even with all that power, the Dragon will be a five-seater SUV with plenty of room and carbon fiber. 

Ok, but how fast is the Draco Dragon?

The Tech and engineering magic happens in Silicon Valley, where Drako is headquartered. The Dragon will come powered by Drako’s DriveOS Quad Motor Powertrain with pinpoint control of positive and negative torque at each wheel.

With all tech taken into account, the four motors put out up to 2,000 hp and allow an alleged 1.9-second 0-60 mph sprint, a 9-second quarter-mile, and 200-mph+ (322-km/h+) top speed. At least, that is what Drako estimates.

Far be it from me to fuss about a fast car, but 260 mph might not be the best idea for anything that can be described as an SUV. The electric powertrain tech is the next big leap in automotive performance. The writing is on the wall. However, the speed at which we add power to consumer cars is a little concerning to some. I guess, for now, we will just have to wait to see if the Dragon can truly breathe fire. 

This hyper-SUV might actually look good

It isn’t uncommon for hypercars to end up all kind of looking the same; a wedge with some lights and wheels. However, based on the tiny bit we can see from the teasers, the Dragon seems to be going for something off-menu in the hypercar world, even if it does sound a little like a Tesla. 

New Atlas says that Drako employed Lowie Vermeersch, former design director of Pininfarina, and his Granstudio design firm to achieve a uniquely styled car. Since we really can’t see too much from the teasers, the overall aesthetic seems to center around a very swoopy and smooth fastback design. I guess if the Dragon is meant to carry all those ponies, the electric SUV must be aerodynamic. 

I guess, for now, we will just have to wait to see if the Dragon can truly breathe fire.
