Unfortunately, most automakers are phasing out the manual transmission, and there are only a few left that understand what driving engagement is all about. The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek is available with a six-speed manual transmission

If you’re looking for a subcompact SUV, there’s almost no better choice than the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek. Its all-wheel drive layout, five-seat capacity, and generous storage space make it one of the most capable and practical cars on the road. Even better, you can option the Crosstrek with a six-speed manual transmission to squeeze every last bit of fun out of it.

The 2023 Subaru Impreza has the option to shift the gears yourself

The 2023 Subaru Impreza is available with either a CVT or a five-speed manual transmission. Although the stick shift offers more driving engagement, it’s not as fun as you would think. According to Car and Driver, “its five-speed stick isn’t the one we’d recommend as it lacks precision.” It also gets worse mileage than when the car is equipped with the CVT. That’s a bummer, but it’s still nice to know that Subaru offers a manual on its base sedan.

The Subaru BRZ offers a stick for maximum driving enjoyment

Although the manual transmission isn’t that fun on the Impreza, you can bet that it’s a lot more fun on the BRZ. The 2023 BRZ is offered with either a six-speed automatic or manual transmission to change the gears. Both of them pair nicely with the car’s naturally aspirated 2.4-liter flat-four engine that produces 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. But the stick shift is the way to go.

Even better, the manual transmission is standard equipment, while the automatic is a $1,500 upcharge. We know which one we would get.

Thankfully, the Subaru WRX still comes with a manual transmission

The Subaru WRX has an amazing rally-inspired pedigree that translates well onto the road. For the 2022 model year, the WRX is powered by a turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four that generates 271 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, which is fun to drive. However, the best way to control that power is through the six-speed manual transmission, not the optional CVT.

Thankfully, that manual transmission is available on all three of the WRX trim levels, which start at an affordable $29,605 and top out at $35,495 for the top-trim Limited.

New Subaru models with a manual transmission

Although plenty of automakers are currently phasing out manual transmissions from their lineups, Subaru is not. Although, we wouldn’t be too surprised if the Japanese automaker nixed it from the Crosstrek and the Impreza later on. But as long as the BRZ and WRX still come with a manual transmission in the future, we’ll be happy. We’re sure every other driving enthusiast will be too.
