Despite being one of the world’s biggest carmakers, Toyota has taken its time switching to EVs. However, the auto giant knows Americans love SUVs, so plans for another all-electric crossover are underway. Here’s what we know about the upcoming Toyota three-row electric SUV set to be built in America and released in 2025.

Toyota has been slower than most to transition to EVs

Toyota was one of the first car brands to introduce an EV to the American market — an electric RAV4 in the 1990s. Though the experiment was unsuccessful, the Japanese automaker didn’t give up. It continued experimenting and producing green cars, with the Prius being its most famous example. 

But as far as EVs go, Toyota decided to bet on hydrogen cars like the Mirai. Hydrogen cars are technically EVs, but they’re different from battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) because they rely on batteries rather than hydrogen as their electricity source. Because Toyota invested heavily in hydrogen cars, it lagged behind other automakers that had invested in BEVs. 

Governments also began subsidizing BEVs more than hydrogen cars, prompting Toyota to push back against EVs because those subsidies didn’t benefit the company much. Despite its opposition to BEVs, the auto giant knows the world wants battery-powered EVs, and the company is finally investing more heavily in those types of cars.

Toyota has a new 3-row electric SUV in the works

As part of that new investment, Toyota says it’ll introduce 10 EVs worldwide by 2026. One of those EVs that’s coming soon is a three-row SUV. The company plans to start production in 2025.

Toyota has confirmed a few details about the upcoming SUV. First, it’ll be an electric three-row SUV. Second, it’ll be assembled in America at the company’s facility in Georgetown, Kentucky. And third, the SUV’s batteries will be built at Toyota’s newest plant in North Carolina. Although those details might not sound meaningful to most car shoppers, they have promising implications. 

The Biden administration recently revamped the federal EV tax credit, and it’s more generous than before. But it also comes with some new stipulations. The tax credit now has rules about EVs and their batteries being built in America. If the upcoming Toyota three-row electric SUV and its batteries are both made in the United States, consumers should be able to take advantage of that new EV tax credit.

The company has a bright EV future 

Toyota mass-produces only one all-electric vehicle, the bZ4X. This compact crossover is decent in most areas, but its main flaw is its range. It tops out at only 252 miles — less than many other EVs’ range. The good news is that, in addition to introducing an upcoming slate of EVs, Toyota is upgrading its vehicles’ range.

The automaker hasn’t released many details on how it will do that, but it aims to double its EVs’ range by 2026. That could have implications for the upcoming three-row SUV’s range. If Toyota succeeds in that goal, its future EVs might boast over 400 miles of range.
