More automotive nameplates are returning from the grave. We have the Ford Bronco, Mvericke, Chevy Blazer, VW Scout, and Toyota FJ Cruiser returning to the market. But the new Toyota FJ Cruiser could be totally different from its roots. 

What to expect with the Toyota FJ Cruiser 

The 2026 Toyota FJ Cruiser is rumored to be tiny, mighty, and electric. When the concept was revealed the boxy-looking FJ Cruiser had EV on the end. 

Plus, the rumor mill suggests that the new Cruiser will come out right after the new Toyota Stout EV truck is released. Both models could share the same platform and powertrain. 

But for those who aren’t ready to make the transition to fully electric power, there’s still hope. Technically, hybrid vehicles fall under the umbrella. 

Also, Toyota has been dipping its toe into hydrogen power, but that seems too far away for the new Cruiser if it arrives in 2026. 

Both the Stout and Cruiser are expected to use the TNGA-C platform. This platform will also be used for fifth-generation Toyota hybrid vehicles, like the redesigned Toyota RAV4.

The Toyota Urban SUV concept could use the e-TNGA platform which currently underpins the struggling Toyota bZ4X electric SUV. 

As you may have gathered, the Ubran SUV is designed for the city and the Cruise will be rugged for off-roading. Electric power makes sense for places with more charging solutions as hybrid SUVs adventure into the wild. 

According to Torque News, the Cruiser could borrow the Camry Hybrid’s powertrain. The 2.4-liter inline-four engine is paired with two electric motors to generate 232 hp. 

It gets an EPA-estimated 51 mpg in the city and up to 53 mpg on the highway, which beats the Ford Maverick Hybrid. The Maverick Hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 42 mpg in the city and up to 33 mpg on the highway. 

Also, a rugged compact SUV makes sense in the lineup. The FJ Cruiser was discontinued in 2016 due to a lack of sales. It was being completely outsold by the Toyota 4Runner. 

Now a smaller rugged option could slot below the RAV4 TRD Pro and compete against the Subaru Crosstrek and Jeep Compass. Stay tuned for updates.
