The New Toyota Tacoma Actually Got Worse in 1 Crucial Area
Try not to drool when you look at the brand-new Toyota Tacoma. It looks lean and mean, and we can’t wait to get behind the wheel. But while most of the features have been improved and modernized, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma actually went backward in one important trucking area.
How much can the 2024 Toyota Tacoma tow?
When properly equipped, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma can tow up to 6,500 lbs. The current generation can tow up to 6,800 lbs, so the new model lost a little strength. We were hoping for it to get more hauling power.
To tow 6,500 lbs, you need the i-Force engine, which is the mid-level option. The i-Force engine is a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 278 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque when paired with the automatic eight-speed transmission.
If you pair this engine with the available six-speed manual transmission, then power is reduced to 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. That’s hardly a sacrifice for the advantages of a rare manual transmission.
The tow rating is also based on the SR5 and TRD PreRunner trims with two seats. If you upgrade to the i-Force Max Hybrid engine, you get the same turbocharged unit with two electric motors and a battery pack.
It cranks up the power to 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. However, this engine can only tow up to 6,000 lbs. This is disappointing because this engine is standard with the TrailHunter and TRD Pro trim levels.
These are the most hard-core models for adventuring, but they can’t bring as much stuff along! Also, other vehicles have been increasing their towing capacities. For example, the 2024 Jeep Wrangler can now tow up to 5,000 lbs instead of only 3,500 lbs.
But the hauling capacity did increase from 1,685 lbs to 1,709 lbs, so that’s a win. Plus, The standard Tacoma engine provides 228 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque.
Does the 2024 Tacoma have a better ride quality?
Some 2024 Toyota Tacoma models should have an improved ride quality, but lower trim levels feel shafted. The SR, SR5, XtraCab, and PreRunner trims still have an older leaf spring setup. Other models replaced the springs with coils with the new multi-link rear suspension.
The new Toyota Tacoma rides on the TNGA-F global truck platform and incorporates high-strength steel with blanking and laser welds to increase rigidity. Aluminum is used to reduce upper body weight, and the frame cross members are enhanced to increase durability.
A new cross member was developed for the steering box for additional support, enhanced steering, and more responsive handling. Also, the wheelbase grew by nearly four inches. This should provide a much smoother ride.
Does the 2024 Tacoma have a better interior?
Yes, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma has a modernized interior with attractive upscale materials and extra space. The premium touches still maintain retro nods to previous generations with a similar steering wheel and gear shifter design.
The design is simple and intuitive, with leather-covered surfaces, gloss black badging, subtle metal brushed trim, and chunky controls. People who prefer physical controls over touchscreen menus will be happy.
An 8.0-inch screen comes standard, but you can upgrade to a massive 14.0-inch unit. The rear seats fold flat to create a level cargo shelf, and a MOLLE system helps with organization. There are also more cubbies and storage trays available.
The cabin grew to provide more cargo and passenger space. Adults in the rear should be more comfortable than in past generations. You can go for a larger truck bed to carry extra gear as well.
Every aspect of the 2024 Toyota Tacoma seems to be improved except for the towing figures. Rivals can tow up to 7,700 lbs, which could make them more attractive for work and camping. But the new Tacoma is larger, smarter, more comfortable, and more capable than before.
