The Toyota Tundra is one thirsty truck. Toyota has updated the Tundra nameplate after over a decade of consumers complaining about how antiquated the pickup had become in comparison to the competition. The latest Tundra model has better fuel economy, but this full-size pickup truck will still take a bite out of your wallet.

Do Toyota Tundras get good gas mileage?

Toyota Tundras do not get good gas mileage compared to other full-size pickup trucks. The 2022 Toyota Tundra gets much better gas mileage than previous model years, but it’s far from perfect.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra | Toyota

The 2022 Toyota Tundra achieves 18 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway. The 2021 model year got a measly 13 miles per gallon in the city and 17 miles per gallon on the highway. Before the 2022 model year, Tundras were known for their powerful (and thirsty) V8 engines. Fuel economy was never part of the Tundra’s appeal.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra will be offered as a hybrid, but its fuel economy doesn’t change drastically. According to Kelley Blue Book, the Tundra Hybrid only gets 20 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway.

When it comes to fuel economy, the Toyota Tundra lags behind the competition. Full-size trucks don’t normally get stellar fuel economy but the Tundra is exceptionally thirsty.

How much will the 2022 Tundra cost?

The 2022 Toyota Tundra starts at $35,950. It uses a 3.5-liter V6 engine to make 348 horsepower. The Tundra comes in seven unique trim levels. The final trim, the Capstone, starts at $73,530.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra is fairly expensive. The 2022 Ford F-150 starts at $30,495. The 2022 Ram 1500 starts at $35,900, but it got a perfect 10/10 overall score from Car and Driver.

The Tundra isn’t the best truck in its class for the money. That title belongs to the Ram 1500. The latest Tundra model year may not be class-leading, but it’s a huge improvement from previous model years. It’s safe to say this is the best Tundra yet in terms of quality, value, and fuel economy. After 13 long years, the Toyota Tundra is finally a real competitor again.

Is a Toyota Tundra worth it?

If you’re looking for the best full-size truck on the market, the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 still lead their segment. That being said, it’s hard to dismiss just how much Toyota’s pickup truck has grown in a single model year. Everything from the truck’s exterior styling to its cabin has improved drastically.

The Tundra is a more attractive full-size truck option than ever before. Now is it worth over $35K? That’s entirely up to the consumer. Some Tundra fans will jump at the opportunity to experience the latest Tundra models. The average consumer may not see the truck’s value as sufficient for its price.

Consumer Reports is testing the truck so a verdict on its value will be out soon. In the meantime, if you don’t see the Tundra as worth buying, you can at least admire its growth.
