The Volkswagen Golf has been in production since 1974 and it has easily become one of the brand’s flagship vehicles. 2020 Reveal

The 2020 Volkswagen Golf is already in production, but no one’s gotten an official look at it yet. According to Motor1, the 2020 Golf was originally scheduled to be unveiled in September, at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany. But Volkswagen made the conscious decision to push back its debut, to allow its new electric hatchback model to grab all the attention. But Volkswagen is ready now to unleash the 2020 Volkswagen Golf Mk8, officially set to be released on October 24, 2019.

The Golf Mk8 will premiere at a “Life Happens with a Golf” event at Volkswagen’s home base, Wolfsburg, Germany. Anticipation for the new Golf is at an all-time high, with Volkswagen claiming to set new standards with the Golf’s design, assistance system, intelligence, and efficiency. 

VW Golf Expectations

Not all trims and Golf models will be available in the U.S., with SportWagen and Alltrack versions only available in Europe. But the entire Golf lineup will be getting a major overhaul, with popular GTI and R variants certain to make an appearance. In a report seen on Motor1, plans for the new 2020 Golf will include a plethora of standard equipment, like a fully-digital instrument cluster, LED headlights, lane-keeping assist technology, and an impressive touchscreen display. This infotainment system will also be able to support over-the-air updates.

The iconic hatchback will be available with both traditional and electric powertrains, but no hybrid options as Volkswagen turns its attention to the new electric vehicle in its lineup. According to The Fast Lane Car, the new Volkswagen Golf Mk8 will get a redesigned front end and rear, as well as more modern switchgear. Another report by Motor1 claims the new Volkswagen will have a sportier appearance than ever before, with shorter overhangs, sharper lines, and integrated sweeping turn signals.

It’s also suspected that the 2020 Golf will be lighter, and will be available in a variety of engine configurations. It will only be available in an automatic transmission and is slated to start hitting dealerships in the U.S. in early 2020. Other variants of the Golf may not be ready until 2021 or 2022.

Current 2019 Volkswagen Golfs start at just over $21,000 and have an overall fuel economy rating of 28 mpg. Consumer Reports gives the 2019 Golf an overall score of 74 and a road test rating of 82 out of 100. It offers a quality drive and powerful feel, without the fancy price tag. With a punchy powertrain and quality components on the interior, current models have been referred to as “the best Golf yet.” The 2020 Golf will have a lot to compete with.

In previous years, the Volkswagen Golf has proven to be the perfect blend of practicality and driveability, honing its suspension and handling over time.
