Newest McLaren Supercar Makes North American Debut At 200 MPH
In January, we brought you the news that McLaren had killed off its flagship car, the 720S. However, McLaren was already well on top of its replacement. Now, the new McLaren supercar is here. To bring it to North America with style, McLaren blasted it down a public highway at over 200 miles per hour at the Sun Valley Tour de Force.
How fast is the McLaren 750S?
The short and simple answer is: extremely.
The McLaren 750S sports a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine in the middle of the chassis. With 740 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, you’d obviously expect some serious grunt. That being said, the addition of its carbon fiber construction makes for an extremely lightweight car. Coming in at only 2,815 pounds, this McLaren supercar weighs about the same as a Ford Fiesta.
That monstrous power-to-weight ratio means the 750S sprints from zero to 62 MPH in just 2.8 seconds. It’ll hit 120 MPH in about 7 seconds, run a 10-second quarter mile, and blaze on to a top speed of 206 miles per hour.
Retired F1 Driver Stefan Johansson took the McLaren 750S to over 200 MPH
To properly welcome the 750S to North America, McLaren brought it and former F1 driver (and Le Mans winner) Stefan Johansson to Sun Valley, Idaho, for the Sun Valley Tour de Force. This is a unique charity event wherein supercar owners are invited to blitz down a mile of closed highway to see how fast they can go.
The event takes place on a section of Highway 75 in Idaho that is closed down for high-speed runs. For 20 minutes at a time, the road becomes a race track of sorts, with the only barrier between drivers and their car’s top speed being their willingness to keep their foot to the floor. That, and maybe a bit of a headwind and some heat soaking.
Obviously, Johansson isn’t a stranger to keeping his foot down when behind the wheel. So, the shiny new McLaren supercar made its way down the track and across the finish line at a speed of over 200 miles per hour. Not too shabby for a hot Idaho day!
We look forward to seeing more of the 750S in action as it begins its production and customer deliveries. Ultimately, though, this awesome new car is certainly filling the 720S-shaped hole left in our hearts earlier this year.
