When Dodge introduced the new Challenger back in 2008, many were surprised that the second generation’s appearance was nearly identical to the first. Since the release of the second-generation Dodge Challenger more than a decade ago, its powerful engine options have made sure it’s still as desirable a muscle car as it was back in 2008.

But one of the concerns Challenger enthusiasts have had as we inch closer and closer to Dodge finally revealing the next-generation Challenger is that the company will stray from the Challengers distinctive retro style.

Dodge’s decision to keep the Challenger retro

 The Dodge Challenger’s retro style has served Dodge well. The design has cross-generational appeal, which helps drive sales, plus there are no other cars on the roads that look like the Challenger. The uniquely retro design is a huge branding tool for the company. Changing it would make the Challenger less recognizable and likely hurt sales, while driving up the price of used 3rd generation Challengers.

Consumer feedback was one of the main reasons Dodge opted to continue the Challenger’s retro style. When the design team attended popular car events, such as Roadkill Nights, the company used questionnaires and clinics to learn what consumers loved about the Challenger and what they’d like to see changed. One of the most loved features was the vehicle’s retro style. 

One of the great things about the retro style the Dodge Challenger embodies is that it gives the impression of a super powerful sports car that’s built for speed. However, many people are surprised by just how much space the retro design provides passengers. The vehicle has a shocking amount of leg and storage space, making it an attractive and comfortable family vehicle. The retro look proves that a family car doesn’t have to be a boring vehicle.

The 2019 Dodge Challenger is rated number three amongst comparable sports cars, but it’s more than a sports car. It also works well as the primary vehicle for small families. Since it’s a four-door vehicle, it’s easy to load kids, pets, and groceries into the backseat. The trunk provides you with ample room for luggage, camping equipment, and anything else you might need.

Agility is compromised

While the Dodge Challenger looks and drives like a powerful vehicle, it’s not the best choice if you’re looking for a zippy vehicle that takes tight turns and makes fast stops. The Challenger’s design is all about gaining speed on long stretches. That being said, Dodge has done an excellent job of improving the way the Challenger handles complicated driving situations. Drivers can choose from four different types of braking systems, two of which are state-of-the-art Brembo brakes, the better brakes improved the vehicle’s stopping speed and overall performance. The Challenger’s electronic power steering significantly improved the amount of control the driver had over the vehicle, as well as the Challenger’s overall agility. The most powerful and agile Dodge Challenger is the Hellcat.

Based on the feedback Dodge has gotten from consumers, it’s likely that the Dodge Challenger will retain its current, retro style for a long time to come. What will be interesting is if this encourages Dodge to try out a vintage look on any of its other vehicles.
