Sure, the Nissan Murano comes recommended by Consumer Reports. The IIHS recognized it as a Top Safety Pick+ too. And while that does make it a solid pick among its segment, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s going to be the perfect fit for you. Fortunately, these midsized SUVs make for some appealing alternatives to the Nissan Murano.

The Subaru Outback is an alternative to the Nissan Murano that deserves your attention 

Much like the Nissan Murano, this year’s new Subaru Outback comes recommended by Consumer Reports. It earned some pretty high marks too. Not only did it earn an 86 overall score, but Consumer Reports also gave it a four out of five predicted owner satisfaction rating. All in all, those scores are pretty hard to argue with.

That being said, the Nissan Murano does have the edge when it comes to reliability. Meaning, if you’re a stickler for reliability, this alternative to the Nissan Murano may not be the best fit for you. In fact, while Consumer Reports gave the Subaru Outback a three out of five predicted reliability rating, it gave this year’s Murano a four out of five predicted reliability rating.

While the Subaru Outback may not be the most reliable alternative to the Nissan Murano, it is important to note that it received similarly high safety ratings from the IIHS. After acing crash tests, the IIHS recognized both models as a Top Safety Pick+.

Kelley Blue Book recommends the Ford Edge as an alternative to the Nissan Murano

According to Kelley Blue Book, the Ford Edge is another worthwhile alternative to the Nissan Murano. Kelley Blue Book reports that this year’s Edge is available with a more modern infotainment system. This year’s new Ford Edge also offers up significantly more passenger space and cargo volume than the Nissan Murano does.

Kelley Blue Book isn’t the only one singing the Ford Edge’s praises either. Consumer Reports gave this year’s Edge an 83 overall score, in comparison to the Nissan Murano’s 79 overall score. It also gave the Ford Edge a four out of five predicted reliability rating. 

Choose the Kia Sorento for a cheaper alternative to the Nissan Murano

Now, the Nissan Murano isn’t the most expensive midsize SUV out there. Opt for the base model Murano and you can expect to spend approximately $32,610. Upgrade to the Murano S for features like remote start and intelligent cruise control, and you can expect to spend just under $38,000. The Murano SL, on the other hand, will have you spending $40,110 for added features such as a Bose premium audio system and a motion-activated liftgate. At its most expensive? The Murano will have you spending just over $44,000. 

For a cheaper alternative to the Nissan Murano, consider the Kia Sorento. Much like the Murano, this year’s Sorento offers up plenty of interior space, it even offers a third-row for those in need of more passenger space. It was also recognized by the IIHS as a Top Safety Pick and comes recommended by Consumer Reports. This year’s model boasts a base price of $29,390 too, making it the perfect alternative to the Nissan Murano if you’re hoping to save rather than spend.
